Hi,

As the mushy season is starting in aus I've decided to give it a go, but I can't find any info on disguinushing between actives and non actives? Something about them bluing from the P?

Thanks

active mushrooms are easy to spot, you can usually see them leaving in the early hours of the morning for a daily bike ride, and in the evenings you can be sure you'll spot them lifting weights in the the shade....

sorry I had to.

LOL

Mycology is a huge subject, go out there and do LOTS of research.

Picking mushrooms for consumption can be VERY dangerous... Be careful.

dont pick stuff on your own youre pretty likely to grab the wrong ones unless youre very experienced

I've read a bit of stuff on shroomery.com but I don't have anyone experienced to go with me, my gf is keen to come but again this will be her first time, we have to start at some point. Can I post pics on shroomery and get feedback on whether they r good? One question regarding picking if yous don't mind- how do I pick them? From the looks of the photos of recent finds it looks like u get them from the roots? I know I've got alot more reading to do but if yous wouldn't mind answering a couple of Qs I would really appreciate the help. Thanks.

Good advice.

A bit overboard. You don't need to be an experienced mycologist to safely pick and consume shrooms, do some serious reading on species that grow in your area before you start though, and if your not confident that you have the right ones don't eat em. The shroomery hunting forum is your friend!

Yep, just don't use a phone cam 'cos they don't have the res needed here in many cases.

Shrooms don't have roots but rather a network of hyphae called a mycelium, which tends to have an overall "white mass" appearance. Pick above this so the mycelium stays in the ground. The mushrooms you see are kinda like the fruit of the organism, picking them doesn't harm it. It's important to preserve the mycelium though so more shrooms grow there which everyone can enjoy!

Do not go out and pick mushrooms if you dont know what you're doing.

You could easily pick something poisonous and do yourself some really unnecessary damage.

Either do research like others have suggested, or find some one experienced in musshroom picking (Aud has plenty of folks like this) to show you the way.

rule #0 of picking mushrooms is NEVER eat a mushroom unless you are 100% positive about its identification. become familiar with the terminology that mycologists use to describe mushrooms (pileus, stipe, annular zone, spore print, fibrous, etc etc)

rule #1 of picking mushrooms is ALWAYS use a separate container for each type of mushroom that you find, and ALWAYS label the container with detailed notes about the habitat

rule #2 is know what you are looking for before you go out, and read your field guide (you do have a field guide right?) thoroughly so you know what to expect.

different species of fungi have different habitats. some are parasitic on living trees. others are saprobic on dead woody debris. others are dung-lovers. still others gain their nutrition from a symbiotic relationship with plant roots. there are even fungi that infect and eat insects (cordyceps). knowing what your mushroom should be eating is a large step to identifying the fungus.

know your seasons-- some fungi fruit only in cold weather, others like it warm. in general most will only show up after a good rain though, so don't go hunting in the middle of a drought cuz you won't find jack shit.

mushroom hunting is only about 100x more complicated than "is it active or not" unless you are fortunate enough to have someone show you the ropes first-hand. an internet photo of a mushroom is NOT sufficient identification to consume.
