Teens hospitalised after drinking toxic flower

Nearly 10 Tasmanian teenagers have been hospitalised in the past fortnight after eating a highly-toxic plant with known hallucinogenic effects.

Police believe up to 20 people may have consumed shots brewed from the datura or angel's trumpet plant without knowing it would do to them have urged them to seek medical help.

Constable Ricki Eaves said the man who made the concoction most likely found the plant on his property then took the drink into the city where it was given to friends and acquaintances in shot glasses, The Mercury reports.

The first teen was hospitalised in Hobart on Wednesday, with nine more taken to hospital over the next two days suffering from delirium and hallucinations.

The Daily Telegraph has previously reported the bell-like flower is a popular garden plant easily bought from nurseries and found growing along roadsides.

The plant's flowers, stems, and leaves are well-documented for their mind-altering properties, but are also known to cause extreme behavioural disturbances including blindness, seizures, constipation and fluid retention.

"We would urge anyone who has datura not to drink it, and we'd ask them to warn others who might be tempted to try it," Mr Eaves said yesterday.

In 2000, 14-year-old Robert Crack was acting strangely before he drowned in a creek. The coroner found that the teen had consumed datura just before his death.

The plant has also been linked to deaths in the US and Mexico.

I've actually been offered Datura before but turned it down. Anyone else experienced it?

Oh not again, not more teenagers and Datura :( This is why we need accurate drug education in schools that amounts to more than "just say no". Otherwise you get kids smoking banana peals, eating nutmeg, licking toads, and taking very dangerous tropane alkaloids...

Please be really careful with datura. I have personal horror stories with this substance.

Datura contains scopolamine, an analog of atropine which is a powerful muscarinic receptor antagonist [thanks babydoc]. Higher doses have been known to cause death, and lower doses blindness.

The biggest problem with datura, besides its unwanted properties, is establishing the right dose. At different times of the year there are different levels of alkaloids in the trees. The flowers contain the most scopolamine, and should be the only part used, as the leaves contain other more poisonous things. (although its best not to use it at all)

Another problem is that there are different species, some with really high levels of the active alkaloids. I once thought there were only white, pink and yellow flower varieties, (yellow being the most potent) but someone told me there are several subspecies of white. I've not checked the literature on this.
The first time I had datura, it was a weak boil-up of white flowers. I was cautious and had a small amount. Others were greedy and paid the price. It was somewhat scary but at the time not realising the dangers it seemed more humorous.

The next time we had less than 10mls each of the yellow extract. I couldn't tell whether it was day or night. I would just appear places, but had no idea how I got there or what could have happened in between. I went into the wrong caravan at the park, and thinking it was ours, lay on the bed in front of the people and didn't even notice them. Another one of the crew, a normally quite easy going guy, chased a family around a picnic table with a knife. He'd never met them before and couldn't remember anything of the incident later. A third mate almost totally lost his sight and the rest of us suffered poor eyesight for weeks after (couldn't read a paper for 3 days)

Another time I acted as co-pilot (I only touched it twice myself-Edit: err...3 times actually, but as I hardly felt the second time it probably doesn't count as an experience) I walked into a house where two guys were coming up. They were really out of it so I accompanied one guy to the shop. That was bad enough on its own. When we returned the other guy had completely smashed every wall in the house. He said he got paranoid and stashed his plant in the wall by bashing a hole in it. He then forgot where it was and figured the wall had healed up, so he smashed them all until he found it.

On a later bent the other guy went up into his ceiling and fell through. I found him hours later on his lounge room floor with a fractured jaw and a busted knee, oh and coffee table.

If you're not deterred yet, how about the 5 people in Christchurch around the early 80's, who got locked in a room while on datura and literally tore each other to peices!

Datura in my opinion is a poison which causes hallucinations. That's all - avoid it, there’s little other harm minimisation advise to offer for this one.

Ill try ANYTHING once and have tried Datura twice now and would NEVER EVER touch the stuff again, its not a drug and its not fun, its poison.
This was all on the same day......I pissed in a mates fridge thinking it was the toilet, dropped my phone in the actual toilet then fished it out and erm.....sucked the water out of it, got filmed making invisible sandwiches and talking to invisible friends and the worst part of the experience was going to watch a mates son play soccer (Id just drank it and wasnt effected when i left) where I wandered off and ended up in front of the pitch being watched by lots of parents having an imaginary business meeting trying to fax things on my imaginary fax and answering calls on my imaginary phone much to the amusement of my friends and weird looks from the parents. Its funny now when I look back but its not really enjoyable.

Tasmanians? Why didn't they use Fly Agaric instead?

That shit is very toxic too. Datura is pretty bad as well. I dont understand why someone would want to try/use these sort of things. There are soooo many other alternative things that one could try which have much less consequences.

My friend told me a story about how a guy chopped his penis and tounge off with hedge trimmers from datura.
I was like "pfff, what a retard, I could do datura fine.. most likely"

But after CONSTANTLY hearing bad reports from it, I think I'll turn it down.
Styxenhammer on youtube's report, he said it was terrible, everything I read.. everyone says it's terrible.

A no-no for me, that's for now.

I remember being told by some people I was an idiot for saying I wanted to try DMT.
I couldn't understand why, and they told me that it can cause blindness.
I pretty much flat out told them they were wrong, but they were certain they were right (and they are fairly experienced users)

I had no idea what they were talking about then, but after reading this I guarentee it was Datura and I'm gonna rub it in their face haha

The police should hire a couple of the kids to make a video or go around to do talks at different schools about how datura is no fun at all. It only takes one stupid person to hear about this 'toxic flower' and go and tell a bunch of kids about how you can trip off it...no one has heard of datura before and that's the problem. They call every drug toxic and deadly in the media, and list off whatever obscure/not obscure side effect...kids will probably read this article and be 'cool i wants to trip out on teh flowers' and since they did a pill last new years and didn't die they'll surely be fine with this harmless flower.

Dmt is amazing. =P nice changa mix and enter another world... mmmm wish i still had amazin connects lol

I remember hearing about this "trumpet flower" when I was really little kid, my next door neighbour told me he saw in the news that someone did in fact cut their penis and tongue off. No need to drink this nasty shit.

Just because you don't like deliriants it doesn't mean they're bad drugs and nobody will like them. Fly Agaric are toxic but you dry them in an oven. DPH is another alternative but Benadryl is the only source in Aus unless you order them online.

Anyone that would be interested to try Datura would be well-advised to read every, single, trip report they can find * about this substance. Before hand.

BT :)
