Parents of a 19-year-old California teen who recently died after smoking synthetic marijuana spoke to KTLA about trying to prevent similar deaths from happening in the future.

On July 11, Connor Eckhardt inhaled one hit of dried herbs that had been sprayed with chemicals to cause a pot-like high, his parents said.

“In a moment of peer pressure, he gave into that, thinking that was OK, it was somehow safe, and one hit later, he goes to sleep and never wakes up,” Connor’s father, Devin Eckhardt, said.

Connor Eckhardt quickly slipped into a coma and experienced brain swelling, his parents said.

Effects of smoking the often-legal product include altered mental state, irregular heartbeat and seizures, the Los Angeles Times reported.

“These substances are not benign,” Dr Andrew Monte, the lead author of an editorial in the New England Journal of Medicine, said. “You can buy designer drugs of abuse at convenience stores and on the Internet. People may not realize how dangerous these drugs can be – up to 1,000 times stronger binding to cannabis receptors when compared to traditional marijuana.”

A sad story really. If you're going to smoke to get high use real marijuana and not these unknown chemicals. This might not happen as often if recreational use was legalized and sold in stores instead of these legal alternatives.
 
Really unfortunate. And in a state (and an area of that state), in which medical cannabis is plentiful. Was this young man on probation or some other kind of court-ordered supervision that made him vulnerable to synthetic cannabinoids?

This is the problem with the RC chemical these days, every time something is banned, they just add another molecule and produce something more obscure, with more unknown and potentially dangerous effects.
 
Well fuck. I was smoking these blends for a hot minute again a few months ago to avoid popping dirty's at my sub doctor, I never seemed to have any adverse effets(excect I knew NEVER to go over one or two hits otherwise I would go into a panic state kinda.) Was thinking about ordering some but all these new ones scare me a little, so I just go weed free(for the most part). The should have just kept JWH-18 legal, I use to smoke that ALL the time when it first came out at all the gas stations and never had any issues(these new blends kinda made me feel weird). Or ya know, just legalize fuckin weed so people stop dying from this stuff. Think about the children!!!
 
His dad said he did it on the spot out of peer pressure, I think what's most likely is that he needed to pass a drug test or was trying to stay clean for a job. That's why most teens and young adults end up doin this shit. It's sad, if I am ever in a position where I have to stay clean for a test I'll probably have to smoke this stuff, because I need to smoke weed everyday (although who knows if this crap would even provide the same medicinal benefits). Scary to know that this stuff can end your life.
 
Are kids still really smoking these synthetic cannabinoids?? God I remember when that spice shit was still legal to sell in the state i live in and I tried it one time and that was the LAST time i ever tried it. It was a horrible "high" and just felt dirty and toxic..nothing like real ganja... This is what happens when you make safe drugs illegal, nasty and toxic legal ones pop up

Yep.....this fake weed sh*t is getting as bad as huffing household chemicals now a days.
