Im thinking of going to Canada for the summer most likely Vancouver or Toronto. Im from Ireland and just wondering what the scene is like there if any? mainly into minimal, tech-house and techno also like a bit of dub step and break beat. Cant live without my techno so hoping theres some good nights on!

North American Social?

Good luck finding minimal in Toronto! You'd have a better chance in Montreal. Which is only a 6 hour drive away. There is "some" tech in Toronto. The odd event night here and there. Boat cruises, and probably the mainstay nights at Guvernment/Koolhaus when they bring in the big names in, Canada Day. You'll probably have better luck at This Is London and Comfort Zone. Its been a while but I doubt its changed much.

vancouver scene is pretty dead. mostly "rave" clubs that closes at 2am wtf :\ then there's the afterhours club (no alcohol) full of nammers. you can usually find house, psytrance, and trance music but not so much techno :p

ive never been to any raves in canada except for hullabaloo and that ended in like 05 from what i seen its never been the same but then again im a hhc fein

Doesnt sound too promising :( heard Montreal is a cool place might head there, but does everyone speak french?

stay out of quebec, you get treated worse than scum if you can't speak perfect french.

Pff that's not true at all.
Most people are super friendly in the scene.

Maybe you had a bad experience... but Montreal is one of the most laid back cities there are in Canada.

Toronto and Ottawa are filled with some of the most ignorant people there are.

Montreal is known to be Canada's Student capital... so majority of the people in the city speak english... and almost all are bilingual.

Our rave scene is the least dead, I would say.
We still have interesting venues, new artists all the time.
The people are generally not all snobs that just talk about how good it was in the past.
And there is not as many young people as there are in other cities.

Sorry... but the scenes in Toronto and Ottawa are pretty much dead. Toronto just lost their main rave venue(The Big Bop)... and most of the people that attend are aged 16.

Ottawa still has it sort of together, but also a lot of youngins, and a lot of overused venues. But their bylaws are super strict, so no party will ever go past 2am.

Also, Quebec city has a great scene too... but not as many english speaking people.

nonsense, all of it. you can find great techno parties in Toronto these days if you know where to look. tranceaddict is always a good place to start. keep your eye on tribemagazine.com too.

Yea Montreal is great! I live here! Many after hours spots you can choose from with great experiences. Good on event nights, and as usual know people who frequent the places so they can tell you what are the good nights to attend.

I love Quebec but honestly my french is horrid! I can understand perfectly and speak well enough to get by but you do not need to speak in french here other than to say hello bonjour and au revoir goodbye and merci thank you always goes a long way.

I love Toronto atm just came back from a visit, but I love Montreal too its my home, we all want whats different from time to time.

Hope u have a good time if u have any specific questions ask and i hope i can help.

There's a lot of people who speak english in Montreal and a lot of bilingual people too. You can live in Montreal only knowing english now, it's not a problem at all.

Yeah the best place to party would be in Quebec cities like Montreal and Quebec city .
I don't live in Quebec . I live in Ottawa .

But I head to montreal to party all the time .

Quebec you will find is more laid back and liberal than the rest of Canada And the provice is probably the closest to Europe you could get in north america.

Toronto , vancouver, Ottawa do have clubs and stuff on the techno scene but nowhere near as good

I moved to Canada from Europe a few years back and the closest u will get to the techno European scene would be in montreal mate .

An btw most ppl there speak English . U might have trouble reading though

Trust me mate

...... But on the other hand weed in Vancouver is the bomb :P lol

I would definitely recommend Montreal. Like someone said above: it's got a large student population, so crowds tend to be a little younger (say mostly under 30) than in Toronto. Also when I lived there, I found it to be way cheaper to live/party compared to Toronto.

A lot of French Canadians I've known have been free-spirited and feisty. They're definitely a fun bunch. The language is pretty much a non-issue. It's rare to run into someone who doesn't speak English.

I've never been treated poorly by Quebecois and I've spent collectively like 3-4 months of my life in various places in Quebec. They all speak perfect english and if you already speak english IDK why you'd be pissed about having to use it. French and English are both the official languages in Quebec, all the signs have French and English on them, so if a Quebecois is being an asshole to you its because they're an asshole.
If you go to Montreal go to Club Stereo!
I LOVE CANADA!!!!

yeah, actually, english is not an official language in quebec. it is still widely spoken though. I suspect the reason the above poster was treated like scum in quebec probably had more to do with his scumminess than his language proficiency

No, I got called a pig "headed-american" because I didn't know how to order a coffee in french and they acted like they couldn't speak english.

-btw, after 20 mins of explaining I had to leave Tim Hortans without a coffee.
