Tech question... testing

Afternoon gang.
Okay I know that this is slightly off topic but its the testing forum so what the hell.
I have a number of freinds that work in research labs studying all types of Biol and Chemistry. Does anyone know of anyone with lab access who has tested pills using mass spec? And if so do they have any information that might be helpful.

What sort of info? Like a "GC/MC testing FAQ for Dummies" type info about interupting results? Like real hardcore tech info or info on what a MS actually does in a general sense?
 
Errr, the situation is this. I have a freind who is a analyticial chemist who is very keen to blast pill samples into tiny fragments using whatever technique he see fit at the time. Trouble is that he does'nt take drugs or know anything about drug chemistry He can then get me "all the raw data you could ever need". I am just wondering what the hell I am going to do with this data when I get it.
So I guess that question is... Can we get any really useful infromation from this. Or am I just gunna have some great looking graphs showing the molecular structure of a speckled mitsi!

The Gas Chromatography process separates a substance into its various component parts. Each component is then sent to the Mass Spectrometer which bombards the components with a beam of electrons in order to give the molecules a charge. The molecules of a given component break apart into fragment ions which are then sent into a powerful magnetic field where fragments of various weights separate from each other. The separated fragments can then be charted and the chart compared to a database of previously verified molecules for identification (see below for sample chart). The GC/MS process is quite accurate and requires large and expensive equipment.

This really depends on what type of equipment he has access to. I have access to a GC/MS, but i would never dare to use it because one cycle is about 35minutes. If i got caught, i'd be screwed!!!
Unfortunately tho, without the chemistry knowledge, the printouts will be pretty tough to interpret. However, the two of you could probably work together to figure out what the hell is in the pill. Some GC/MS computer systems and printouts are easy to read, all you have to do is pick a peak and the machine will tell you all the info you need on it (Molecular mass, retention time ect) Others are a bit more difficult, but still if your friend is fairly knowledgable on the workings of the GC/MS, with your help, he'd be able to figure out whats in the pill. For almost perfect accuracy, you have to compare the info to previously gotten info, but you should be able to get a pretty good idea without comparing.
Again, this is something i would never do, just out of the fear of being caught. This is pretty risky, and without approval your friend could easily be fired.
