What people don't realise is that bunnies are INCREDIBLY high maintenance! Most people think they are a kid's pet (they definitely aren't) and that you stick them out in a hutch and feed them carrots and it's all good. Not the case.
I work in rabbit rescue, and have become a bit of a self taught expert (well not EXPERT) in the two years I've been doing it.Firstly it's much better and safer for the bunny to live indoors,as they can be attacked or escape outside, get incredibly lonely (a hutch is not enough they need lots of room to run and jump) and there's more chance of them getting sick and you not noticing fast enough and they die. They can die very easily, they tend to have a suicide instinct.Being a prey animal, they tend to hide their illness, then when they are sick, they tend to give up and can die alarmingly quickly.
Their diet is more complicated than you'd think too,and apart from fresh hay daily, they can only eat certain fruits and vegetables, and only small amounts of some of them as treats as they are too high in carbs.Lettuce for example will give them diahrrea and kill them within 24 hours.
Then yes, there's the poops! They practically poo their body weight every day and unless they are litter trained, that gets messy really fast with indoor bunnies! I currently have four indoor bunnies, and it takes me roughly 2-3 hours a day to clean their areas, feed them and attend to them.
And that's just the beginning! Getting a bunny is not a choice to make lightly....you become their slaves
