tonight on coast to coast am they had on Dr. Fred Bell (probably crazy or nuts like many c2c guests) and he was talking about tamiflu and that kids buy it and put it in the microwave and get and smoke crystals. he said it gave a pcp like high so I take a look at pcp and oseltamivir to see if there is ANY truth to what he is spouting and I see they both have cyclohexene in common. so does tamiflu share anything in else in common with pcp? I noticed the FDA is warning that tamiflu may cause hallucinations.

Where do you see cyclohexene in PCP? If I had to make an educated guess as to the possible adverse reactions from tamiflu I would say that it probably has to do with the fact that it's essentially a sialic acid mimic.

Now while this may be great in gumming up the works of influenza replication, sialic acid is normally present in a lot of biomolecules in the human body, so if this compound can get in and break the enzymes that either attach or detach sialic acid lots of funky shit can possibly happen.

Again this is just a guess, I'm not a biochemist or medicinal chemist, though I know I'm talking less out of my ass than Fred Bell is.

I don't know about kids smoking flu medication, but both PCP and Amantadine (Tamiflu) are NMDA antagonists with significant dopaminergic effects.

I have not tried Amantadine, but from what I read it is more of a deleriant than a dissociative, and certainly not an anaesthetic. It is of the same chemistry as Memantine, btw.

thats bullshit. In now way will smoking tamiflu resemble PCP. Maybe in some delirous drunken high way

wow, we're all gonna believe you now because you were so freakin' articulate.

thanks for that gem.

Er, Tamiflu is not amantadine, it's oseltamivir, a very different drug.

I agree with Ylide's analysis. Sialic acid attachment to proteins is an important part of the secretory pathway.

WOW the postings in this thread are WAAYYY off. Please know what yer talking about b4 u post

tamiflu is 'oseltamivir' which aint even close to any chem> be it cold med or anything that I've seen. Mosdef not amantadine/memantine, PCP, DXM, carbetapentane/caramiphen.

BTW amantadine has NO dissociative/noticable nmda FX, nor any noticable dopamine FX either, just a nasty antichlorogen.

I'm not sure how tamiflu fx the brain. But I read that quite a few japanese kids and teens that were Rx'd this would act very odd and do things like jump off buildings and infront off trucks and the warning label says it may cause delerium/hallucinations.

Nothing is really said why/how/what causes this. Dunno if it's recreational/scary/extremely toxic. But these incidents sound very familiar to the PCP horror stories u hear about to scare people and put them off wanting to try dust. Maybe this point of view was toyed with to come up with the story that it's abused (sounds like a joke to me), but it could be true> I havent seen anything that supports this

Err, a little bit off topic but I don't see what putting this in the microwave would do to its chemical structure...

I guess they ran out of scary things to put on the news. Anybody who would smoke tamiflu is well stupid to say the least

This guy has peddled this Tamiflu is a dangerous recreational drug bit before. There is no truth to any of it.

It reasurring to think that if you make ANY drug for ANY condition, some idiot will come along and try smoking it. 8o crazy
