Taliban chief orders ‘strict’ ban on opium poppy cultivation

Al Jazeera
3 Apr 2022

Excerpt:
The Taliban has issued a decree banning the cultivation of opium poppy, as the group tries to assuage international concerns regarding drug control in the impoverished South Asian country.

“As per the decree of the supreme leader of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, all Afghans are informed that from now on, cultivation of poppy has been strictly prohibited across the country,” the group’s supreme leader Haibatullah Akhunzada said on Sunday.

“If anyone violates the decree, the crop will be destroyed immediately and the violator will be treated according to the Sharia law,” he added at a news conference in the capital, Kabul. The order said the production, use or transport of other narcotics was also banned.

Drug control has been one major demand of the international community to the Taliban, which took over the country in August and is seeking formal international recognition in order to wind back sanctions that are severely hampering banking, business and development.

By bringing faster and higher returns than legal crops such as wheat, opium poppy cultivation became for farmers in the country’s southeast a way to survive amid a dire economic situation.

Afghanistan’s economy is in free fall as the country is facing a dire humanitarian crisis with some 23 million people struggling with acute food shortages, according to the UN.

Does anyone else see the irony in this?

This was the effect of globalism - rape your land to sell an addictive substance to western pharmaceutical firms and then use the proceeds to import food... as opposed to - use the land to grow the food needed at home and avoid exporting misery that will be processed and laundered as medicine

The group banned poppy growing towards the end of their last rule in 2000 as they sought international legitimacy, but faced a popular backlash and later mostly changed its stance, according to experts.
This also drove the price up significantly and made them a ton of money in the end. Some say it was done for that reason.

I don't think that any of Afghanistan's poppy production is used for legitimate pharmaceutical products, could be wrong though

Should we go back to subsistence farming then? I’d rather pay afghans to grow high quality opium and sell them American grown maize.

Certain regions are better at producing certain goods. Global trade has lifted a significant people out of poverty. It’s just what what humans do (even if it does become rampant unfettered capitalism at some point)

From a few years they are also a big player in global meth market.Locals collect ephedra across the country and with simple process extract ephedrine.Than made the meth(in pics.look good-huge shards),which goes mostly on asian market.Locals consume it a lot also_On foil with H.Afghan speedballers. But with talibans for locals addicts come really difficult times

Globalism is a euphemism for ruling-class empiricism. Trade opportunities are merely the carrot they offer, and if you are of strategic value and don't want the carrot then they beat you with the stick instead.

Let us remember who is causing the current crisis -

Directly after the Taliban took power on Aug. 15, the U.S. blocked access to billions of dollars in Afghan central bank reserves held in the U.S. On Aug. 17, the European Union suspended development funding — long-term aid that supported projects ranging from healthcare to agriculture and law enforcement — to Afghanistan but said it would maintain humanitarian aid and observe what kind of government the Taliban formed. Germany and Finland announced a halt to development aid the same day.

On Aug. 18, the International Monetary Fund paused the release of more than $400 million in funds, citing “a lack of clarity within the international community regarding recognition of a government in Afghanistan.” On Aug. 24, the World Bank also stopped disbursing aid money earmarked for the country.

Think about it - would you want your prosperity to depend on people that will let you starve if they don't like your government?
