Edit: Consider different countries, too. I was in Canada. And this is not about legal advice or anything, it's just curiosity.

Considering it's technically a preparation of morphine and other scheduled alkaloids, is it very risky to take it on an airplane, or in another public and observable location? Would it be considered to be "as illegal" as pure morphine, and they'd charge you based on volume and concentration? Or would they use other criteria?

Has anyone ever been arrested for possession of poppy seed tea (with intent to consume/distribute)? What about poppy pod tea?

Just interested because I took two Gatorade bottles worth of potent seed tea on a plane with me. I'd actually forgotten about them, and they were in my carry-on backpack (I had it because I was going through a tapering schedule with it; I was dependent on high doses of IV hydromorphone). The security officer found them, and called another officer and a supervisor over. They talked to me for a while, to ascertain what I claimed the liquid to be. One of the bottles was already filtered of poppy seeds, and the other was still with both tea and seeds. After much discussion (unfortunately they didn't speak English well), I managed to get across that it was just tea, and that I liked poppy seed tea because it had a good taste.

It was kind of funny, because the supervisor caught on, and realized I was using it to get high. He asked me a couple more questions, putting me on the spot to explain why I had it at all, and so much of it. But finally he signaled for the other two to leave me alone, and let me go through security. The guy actually winked at me! Afterwards I spotted them showing off the bottle with seeds (they let me keep the seedless one, oddly) still in it to other officers, having a good laugh. They knew that I was using it to get a high, and didn't do a thing about it; in fact displaying good humour, understanding, and acceptance of my public drug use.

What could I have been charged with? And does anyone else think it's kind of unfair that I could get through security with, basically, morphine tea, yet any other (obvious) drugs would get you in a load of trouble? It's even dangerous, sometimes, to fly with prescribed meds. Maybe it was just a one off, though. Maybe any other officers would have acted differently and at least confiscated it and questioned me more heavily. Maybe I got the officers who were users themselves. In any case, as a result of my conversation with them, I think at least one new person experimented with poppy seed tea. They were having a blast laughing once they realized what I must be using it for, and the supervisor looked very intrigued, and certainly wasn't buying my "it tastes good" excuse.

Just curious.

i think you just got lucky. I told a nurse once that i was dependent on poppy seed tea and she was very interested in it, asked me a few questions and later remarked that she should go home and make her own. I wonder how many people actually know about poppy pod/seed tea.

I'm pretty sure that a preparation of poppy tea would fall under the same guidelines as any other opiate:

1. Opium Poppy (Papaver somniferum), its preparations, derivatives, alkaloids and salts, including:
(1) Opium
(2) Codeine (methylmorphine)
(3) Morphine (7,8–didehydro–4,5–epoxy–17–methylmorphinan–3,6–diol)
(4) Thebaine (paramorphine)

so that definitely covers poppy tea, you got really lucky imo, i would not try that again. You could have been charged with possession of a schedule 1 substance.

I don't think we're allowed threads like this because it's legal discussion (which it is unclear to me whether all legal discussion is completely banned or if it just is limited in scope and to specific areas of Bluelight?), and unless anyone has a reliable source that clearly outlines where poppy seed tea falls under the law in different countries, then all we can do is make guesses. Regardless you can't bring liquids in carry-on (aside from very small quantities and specific exceptions) in most places these days. Personally I wouldn't assume it would necessarily fall under the same guidelines as other opiates because foods containing poppy seeds are not illegal, for example it would be no problem to bring a poppy seed muffin on a plane, so I don't know.... And in my experience with travelling a lot, different security officers and customs officers do act very differently and you really need to be better safe than sorry when it comes to these types of things.

If I've somehow posted wrongly, do close the thread. I was just interested in what people thought, not looking for legal advice or anything. Just wondered if anyone had been arrested for poppy seed tea, and what the charge was. I agree with RobotRipping about the likelihood of charges being raised.

Was also kind of interested in hearing if anyone else had experiences like that with security in airports.

Sorry, if I posted in a manner that has been disallowed. I'm pretty stimulated right now.

That's amazing! What legends!

See how much more harmonious the world can be without beaurocratic power-freak scum stopping people having an innocent harm free time. If only there were more people like the ones you encountered in the world.

This thread is not in accordance to guidelines, and sorry but saying "don't close this thread" holds no weight.

This is legal discussion, any way you slice it.
