Misc Taking Benzos/Opiates prior to a root canal

Well I just got my braces off and it looks like I have 6 cavities that need to get filled. Dr. said it would take ~2hrs. I've had cavities filled before and it's awful, as many of you may know.

Anyway, I have some etizolam and a morphine ER tablet, and I'm wondering if taking either of them beforehand would interact with the novocaine or dental procedures. Note: I'm planning on taking something like 2mg etizolam or 15mg morphine. Something small to make it more bearable.
 
Most dentists will prescribe a benzo or barbiturate prior to your appointment.

I were on 100mg of Methadone and Oxazepam when I did my root canal and pulled one tooth,
worked very well in my favor because I got no pain what so ever. Not even the day after and the day after that.
Ofcourse I checked with my docs if this was safe because I was and AM on the Methadone program and have bensos RXed so no problems there.
I would save the Morphine for later on that day, to the night or maybe to the next morning because you tend to get more pain after a couple of hours
or the next day and if you only got a limited supply I would wait.
 
Yeah, I don't think this doc will prescribe me a benzo before hand, I'll ask tho, maybe I'll get nitrous :)

^You may be surprised. Talk with the receptionist. My dentist offers me the choice of butalbital, diazepam, or codeine (all relatively low dose, of course). I usually take the butalbital. It is the only one that has an effect on me with the dose given.
 
Wow, that's quite a list. Basically, I just want something to take my mind off the drilling etc. for the 2-hours.

Unfortunately, I got sent to re-hab when I was 17 for a year, I had a psych evaluation that diagnosed substance abuse, and one I told one physician I had (a few physicians ago) that was abusing xanax recreationally (not my own prescription).

Is my dentist and/or his assistants able to see any of this?
 
I don't know how things are where you live. I'm addicted to opioids and benzodiazepines. I quit shooting up morphine and levorphanol in October 2009 but I had shot up these and probably over 100 more during a 7-year course of time. When I got to the psychiatrist I still go to, I was on lorazepam. I was switched to clonazepam eventually. I visited the clinic to get on the program in my city and in the capital numerous times.

Nonetheless, my psychiatrist doesn't know about my opioid addiction, my visits at the clinics, and is unaware I was even hospitalized. I don't know how it works, one time I hear "everything is in the computer so I can't write you out a certificate with a backward date", and at the same time. But hey, it's Poland.
 
I would suggest taking the etizolam before the appointment if you have issues with dental work; I know I do, and my dentist lets me take 2mg lorazepam before procedures. It made getting two teeth pulled last month fly by.
 
Interesting thread. I have a severe fear of dentists. I grew up in this hick village and the local dentist there always drilled my cavities without anesthesia. Hell, I didn't even knew about the possibility to have one before my mother told me after at least 3 painful procedures (I can still recall the feeling when the drill is drilling away the teeth, urgh.). So, next time I had a cavity that needed filling I asked the bastard whether I could get an anesthesia to which his reply was: "Anesthesia's are for girls" And me being a shy little frightened kid left it at that.

Back to the topic at hand, we switched dentists and although this one is a good one, I have never heard of them dealing out anxiety reducing pharms. It wasn't until I had to have my wisdom teeth removed (in 2 go's, first left, then right) in the hospital by a professional jaw-surgeon that I got offered some diazepam(and this I mainly owed to my mother who works in the same department in that hospital). I've never heard about normal dentists offering anything of the likes here. It's been a year since my last check-up and I know something's quite wrong with one of my teeth but I'm too chicken to go :\
Etizolam is nice to get me in a free worrysome state, but it's not near enough for a visit to a dentist for me. Doubt my docter will prescibe me diazepam seeing as he's this oldschool village doctor everybody knows, and he was already reluctant about prescribing me oxazepam in my earlier days when my parents split up and lateron when my girlfriend of 5 years broke up with me. Hell, I doubt he's even take me seriously for wanting to take diazepam for a dentist's visit.
 
taking 60-100mgs DXM and asking for the 'highest' level of Nitrous is the best idea IMO. it makes me hole everytime....

Tell your dentist that you are very nervous about the root canal and if he can give you some sedatives to take before the procedure. When I had my wisdom teeth taken out the dentist gave me 2 valiums to take the morning of the procedure.
 
most regular dentists give you novocaine and you tough it out...some dentists go with nitrous oxide and novocaine +opioids for pain after procedure. oral surgeons (whom see for a bit more complicated dental work , in my experience, had given me nitros oxide, novocaine , an IV of valium, and another IV barbiturate in combo..my tolerance to benzos was so high i kept seeing the surgeon plunge more of the benzo/barb into my vein as i wasnt sedated lol. novocaine and nitrous is plenty enough, the rest is just a treat. oral surgeons commmonly give IV benzo/barb, in combo with nitrous and novocaine...and opioids for pain days after
