welcome to the midwest
has anyone done this? if so, how was your experience? im guessing it cant be too good, having not looked into it, b/c of how cheap it is.

any stories are appreciated!

It doesn't necessarily have to suck! I rode the crackhound one time only and I was 18 and pretty afeared but it turned out to be a good time.

Took the bus from that lovely bastion of Mormon-ness, Provo, UT, back to Denver, was bout a 18hr trip if I remember right. Ended up meeting this chick DeeDee from Milwuakee when we stopped in Salt Lake for four hours. We decided that the bus pretty much fuckin sucked so we ran around downtown SLC asking the peoples where the liquor store was. Turns out theres like three total in the whole city haha.
Big thuggish black chick running around with little skinny white raver kid in kicks, porn star shirt and yellow fuzzy hat tryin to get drunk seemed to scandalize the locals pretty good. Anyway we did end up finally getting a bottle of JD and some cokes. Spent the remainder of our time in SLC taking cheesy pictures in front of the temple and stuff like that.
So yeah met a cool chick, got drunk, and smoked a bunch of pinners at rest stops in the mountains.
Didn't turn out half bad considering what I was expecting.

haha everyone i know who has traveled by greyhound has the same story:

horrible experience, met the one cool person on the bus and got totally fucked up. the overall humor and the types of chemicals injested differs from person to person but the foundation is always the same.

this aside, i can think of no worse way to travel than by greyhound

one BLer i know rode a greyhound to cedar point and vowed never to return to OH yet has been back twice.

I can't imagine anything worse than being trapped in a train, sitting idly on the tracks in Gary, IN, waiting for freight trains to move for 3 hours. The lack of movement is what drove me insane. At least buses keep moving.

2 words:

liquor

I've taken a Greyhound from Madison, WI to Chicago and back. It actually wasn't too bad but the trip is only a few hours with the stops we made. It would've still been a lot better if it wasn't as crowded.

I get carsick when I read so that's not an option for me, but I'd suggest that for anyone else or to have an iPod or puzzle book on hand so you can try to deter having to converse with fellow sketchy passengers.

I've never taken a long distance train in the U.S., but I would imagine it would be better. The bus is still kind of a fun way to see the country and I don't think I'd really mind it if I had the time to do it, just be sure to watch your back.

I have taken greyhound buses many many many more times than I can count. It is honestly not that bad, until you get stuck on one that is in horrible disrepair (seeping sewage out of the bathroom in back, chairs don't work, heat doesn't work), full of drunks, student/inmates at a "special" school, people blasting music, what have you, it crashes or breaks down, or some similar thing happens. Yes, I have seen all the above first hand.

My traveling companion is usually a low dose of LSD combined with an opiate, and perhaps a little bit of ketamine thrown in. Caution: I am not kidding, but this is not for the faint of heart. Particularly the LSD.

as Is aid, taking a train over greyhound is the BIGGEST mistake one can make. trains can take 3x as long as a greyhound!!!

and if we are gong to dick size here, Iv taken a grey hound from ATL Ga to St Paul MN, to Chicago Il, to Philly Pa. all in one trip. thats about a week of greyhounding.

Iv taken countless 14-19hour trips.

if you plan on doing alot of grey hounding look for a bus pass, for 720 I believe it is you get three/four weeks of grey hound to anywhere. 370 for two weeks.

its worth it if you plan to run around alot.

Dude, that's awesome! Post those pics if you still have em. :)

Don't get me started on the Fung Wah / Lucky Star / whatever chinese buses. Although the last time I rode in one it had this one section where 2 sets of seats were facing each other along with a little table. There were not many people on the bus and I was able to quickly pass out and sleep comfortably with my feet up on the opposite chair. It was win.

To be honest, I really didnt think greyhound was too bad. But I'd highly recommend some opiates and/or benzos to help pass the time.

My first time on the greyhound was at age 18, and I had the foresight to bring along a bottle of percocet gotten for my recently extracted wisdom teeth. I ended up eating most of the bottle over the 24 hour trip...at some point near Salt Lake City this gangsta type sitting near me starts offering me alcohol, and shows me a backpack full of various bottles. At this point I was pretty high and I just told him the truth, "I would but I just ate a bunch of pills. If I drink now I'll probably pass out." He laughed and then passed out without the aid of opiates. It took the bus driver about 15 minutes to wake him out of his stupor when we had to change buses.

Basically, headphones, some narcotics, and books are a great way to make the time fly on greyhounds. Even if I don't want to listen to music, I generally keep the headphones if I'm sitting next to someone inordinately bizarre, just so I have an excuse not to converse with them, ha ha.

Hell, I do that daily on the city bus! It can be fun to turn the volume down and sort of eavesdrop on other people's conversations sometimes. People are interesting characters indeed. :D

I've taken a Greyhound from New Hampshire to southern California and back. 3 day bus ride each way. On the way there, I was so afraid of having my luggage stolen that I stayed up all 3 days popping ephedrine.

I love Fung Wah and Lucky Star. How can you go wrong for the price?! I think it might be up to $15 one way between Boston and NYC. Some city pairs have cheaper rates and some have more expensive, but they're all mostly in that range.
