tailoring shirts

okay, i've got a 'shape' that shirts just never fit properly, and the last of the shirts my ex tailored for me aren't long for this earth.

if i have ZERO clue about anything related to tailoring, but am a fast learner/DIY'er, would i find doing this myself effective? Or just bring them to the pro's?
 
Why not do both - this way your not going to simply have no shirts to wear :D.

Making my own clothes seems like too much of a ball ache compared to buying something that fits or having something actually made to fit. I say leave it to the pros!
 
oh sorry i musta misspoke - the entire alteration is just slicing between hip and armpit, to tighten the waists up a bit. She could do these so fast and made them look soooo damn easy that i'm wondering if i should go to walmart for a shitty sewing machine (they have handhelds i believe :) )

That also includes fixing the sleeve length too but yeah, it looks like way too much work with too much potential for screwing up a good shirt.

Don't you know anyone who knows how to sew that might be willing to teach you how?

you are trying to make the shirt shorter? i dont understand what it is exactly you are trying to do and could possibly help.

before a sewing machine though, i would go some where for some decent thread that is made of the same material as the shirt you want to use, a rolling razor or sheers, some needles, and a few generic t-shirts to practice with.

do it by hand if you must, man.
 
i'm trying to make the waist tighter. I'm very skinny and have 'skinny-muscular' shoulders/arms/back, so my shirts either have to be tight at the shoulders for a proper waist, or a mumu(sp?) at the waist for proper shoulders.

and by hand is not an option, that's ridiculous waste of time. was just curious if grabbing a sewing machine was a simple/viable alternative to paying the tailor, but doesn't look like it is :/
