Syrian civil war thread

To play devil's advocate (or something): what if Assad really did use sarin rockets, and what if he intends to continue using them? Would it not be incumbent on the rest of the world to at least hurl some stones at his head?

I think the reason China and Russia are voting against action is because there is not proof of who used the weapons. Assad may have been careful to cover his tracks and leave plausible deniability in the situation and as long as no solid connection exists, I don't think this situation is going anywhere. If chemical weapons continue to be used in the conflict, proof will emerge sooner or later.

I'm not sure how I feel about this whole thing. I'm so confused! If the regime used chemical weapons, then I suppose that I am in favor of some sort of strike, but my understanding is that the evidence we supposedly have has been classified, so where then does that leave us?

I'm not sure that I could support a strike until the evidence has been declassified, presented and verified. I don't think that is too much to ask for, and I'm curious as to why they would be reluctant to release the supposed evidence...

To once again play devil's advocate: I believe they have moles in the Syrian military, and divulging this data would lead to the capture of these moles.

Huh... that didn't occur to me. But wouldn't there be some way, some other way, to present the evidence without jeopardizing the safety or selling out those individuals? I suppose not...

in case you don't remember, the initial evidence of the regime being behind the gas attacks as reported on the same day were monitored "panicked calls" in the syrian ministry of defense as the videos got out.

my first thought at the time was those calls would make more sense if they were not aware of the attacks.

Also, Reuters are currently reporting that British chemical companies have supplied Syria with large quantities of sodium flouride; a vital ingredient in the manufacture of sarin nerve gas, in the past......

There is no question they have chemical weapons. The question is whether the Assad regime or forces knowingly used chemical weapons. John Kerry saying that the reason we should act militarily a week before the UN makes a statement is because no one else in Syria can possibly have nerve gas (or other possible nerve agents..) is bullshit.

Moreover, Assad had nothing to gain militarily or politically, and everything to lose. I'm sure Assad sat in a back room with his generals and said, "Alright boys this conflict is finally going our way despite constant western interference. Time for phase 2 of the plan. Let us really piss off the west, so that they attack us, erase all of our military gains, and imprison us for war crimes. Now is the time to strike with chemical weapons, as opposed to using our tried and true conventional tactics!"

The war hawks just want war, and they have been pushing it in the west for 2 years now. Always playing on emotion, 99% of everything being reported based on what some "rebel" spokesman has to say. Look who the rebels are (Sunni Arabs), and look at the last 50-60 years of Syrian history with regards to the rival factions within Syria. Maybe the Christians, Secularists, and Shiites in Syria joined together for a reason..

If it could be proven without a doubt that Assad used chemical weapons I would support prosecuting him, and those involved, for war crimes. The current Russian solution doesn't seem too bad, which is simply to confiscate Syria's chemical arsenal. Any response must be supported internationally. We should be worrying more about the innocent refugees as opposed to further escalation of military operations.

Not sure why everyone is stirred up by a cut out the heart video ?

100,000 people have died been killed, slaughtered, mutilated, burned, pillaged, plundered, left to rot, eaten by maggots, tossed in garbage.

2,000,000 people have had their homes destroyed, pillaged, plundered which left them to flee with nothing but what they could carry.

Not to the thousands of women that have been raped, children that have watch their parents get slaughter and raped in front of them, and other atrocities that happen in war.

Then..- “I saw on TV this guy cut a heart out of a dead person and took bite out of it...”

Yeah, if it is on TV it must be horrible. 8)

Do you think it is our role to act like we have superpowers?

I present, Groundhog Deja Clusterfuck
Tell yourself, why do you think we are really invading Syria?

This is what the UN is for, though. America doesn't really have legal authority over the rest of the world, if a state (especially a member state) breaks international law under the UN, the UN should be the body to enforce the consequences. It seems to defeat the purpose of the UN if one member state has the ability to bypass the entire process.

the russian solution is a smart move. syria are being reasonable about it. if there are any forces pushing for war (for any alterior motive) their work just became significantly more difficult.

The reason is stated in the post, because this guy is the guy we're arming. I'm sorry, if our own military was doing this I'd question them too. I appreciate your small attempt to ridicule me, but it is just that: small.

John Kerry's off hand suggestion got turned into something real by Putin. I bet Kerry has a date in his diary to go meet his sponsors, to get ass fucked.

To be honest I wasn't targeting anyone for ridicule I have seen the glenn beck speech a lot of places so I was just throwing it out their in general.

"The guy we are arming" arming with tools to murder mass people with ? From small arms that kill and mame single people to large bombs and missiles that kill and mane thousands in indiscriminatingly at one go ?

Yeah, he might not be the right guy. We probably need someone that will just stick to killing and mutilating thousands of people a day and not get side tracked with stupid little knife stunts.
I mean what a waste of time he could of blasted a few hundred people to death in that amount of time.

Idono. Maybe it was just a lunch break ? warriors need breaks also.

I don't get the point you're trying to put across but mine is that guns only hurt and kill.

My point is Why are people so shocked to see an army commanders get his heart cut out ?

Thousands of people- women, children, civilians are getting murdered, raped, pillaged. This is a proxy war between superpowers supplying arms and instructions to do it all. I am glad people are starting to question it all. Just compared to all the stuff going on the guys heart getting cut out is nothing.

I am more concerned with tens of thousands of dead civilians and the 2-million+ refugees. I could care less about an army commander/hired murder getting killed.
