I contemplated putting this in Events, but i figured it'd get a better reply in here.

Take the Trip, A Social History "Drugs"

Exhibition
25 Oct 2003 10 Oct 2004
Justice & Police Museum, Sydney
Cnr Phillip & Albert St Circular Quay
Open weekends 10 - 5
Open daily in Jan 10 - 5
www.hht.net.au

"This is an exhibition about our society's love-hate relationship with drugs. It highlights key episodes in Australias drug-taking history: from sly grog to safe injecting, from Bex to BUGAUP, from opium dens to rave nation. Both licit and illicit drugs are featured, including alcohol, cannabis, opiates, ecstasy, cocaine, LSD and amphetamines.

We live in a drug-taking society. The choices we make about drug use are strongly bound up with our identity and beliefs. Whether certain drugs are permitted, condoned or banned often reveals more about a society's values than it does about the real risks of drugs. While many drugs are prohibited, two of the most lethal recreational drugs used today, tobacco and alcohol, remain legal and widely available.

Attitudes to drug use changed dramatically during the 20th century. There was a time when cannibus cigarettes were promoted for asthma relief and opium-laced syrups were sold to parents to calm their teething infants. Australian doctors prescribed heroin for relief during childbirth and for the suffering of cancer patients. Many writers, poets, musicians and painters have sought inspiration in hte fiery euphoria of drugs.

The exhibition tells these stories and more, examining the influence of drugs on subcultures, politics and music, and considers the consequences of prohibition and drug-related crime. This powerful show will challenge your views on drugs"

I went to this today and it was really, really interesting.

It's only a small venue but the layout was awesome, and so much interesting drug history to read!! This coming from the kid who spent all her history classes snoring and drooling all over her desk.

The biggest giggle I got was when I saw they had a display of a packet of Tim Tams as an example of what potheads use when they get the munchies.. along with a written explanation and all. ('Tim Tams are often eaten by marijuana users when they are affected by what is known as "munchies" ' kinda vibe... hehehe)

I was disappointed they didn't make any references to Ketamine, but never mind.

Anyway all in all, considering it's an exhibition hosted at the Justice & Police Museum, it lacked a "Drugs=Evil" vibe and was more of an open-minded look at the history of drugs, especially in Australian culture. it was cool.

gotta admit i felt a teeny bit uncomfortable when i looked up at the security camera though... but I don't think it's anything to worry about, and i'm actually planning on going back there again so I can read more stuff and jot down the names of all the references they made to movies, books etc that i'd love to check out. I mean, it's $7 entry... and a whopping $3 with concession.

go see this, people! it's really good! plus you can get those cute lil free posters of someone's tongue with a pill on it to put up on your wall. I took about 5. :D

I'd be quite keen to check this out. I've been to other exhibitions at the police and justice museum and have found them to be really informative, with a lot of unbiased information on some controversial topics.

Nick... if you come to Sydney... let me know...

Alright... which Bluelighters have done this exhibition on drugs?

One of my uni lectuers is the person behind this - a *top bloke*.

was recently quoted as saying "I feel sorry for anyone who doesn't [try drugs]. It's part of mapping your own body, space and identity."
