Take the Trip, A Social History "Drugs"

Justice & Police Museum, Sydney
Cnr Phillip & Albert St Circular Quay
Open weekends 10 - 5
Open daily in Jan 10 - 5
www.hht.net.au
"This is an exhibition about our society's love-hate relationship with drugs. It highlights key episodes in Australias drug-taking history: from sly grog to safe injecting, from Bex to BUGAUP, from opium dens to rave nation. Both licit and illicit drugs are featured, including alcohol, cannabis, opiates, ecstasy, cocaine, LSD and amphetamines.
We live in a drug-taking society. The choices we make about drug use are strongly bound up with our identity and beliefs. Whether certain drugs are permitted, condoned or banned often reveals more about a society's values than it does about the real risks of drugs. While many drugs are prohibited, two of the most lethal recreational drugs used today, tobacco and alcohol, remain legal and widely available.
Attitudes to drug use changed dramatically during the 20th century. There was a time when cannibus cigarettes were promoted for asthma relief and opium-laced syrups were sold to parents to calm their teething infants. Australian doctors prescribed heroin for relief during childbirth and for the suffering of cancer patients. Many writers, poets, musicians and painters have sought inspiration in hte fiery euphoria of drugs.
The exhibition tells these stories and more, examining the influence of drugs on subcultures, politics and music, and considers the consequences of prohibition and drug-related crime. This powerful show will challenge your views on drugs"
