Wondering what would cause this:
I was in the ER, had mixed up my med, but the nurse inserted the IV with just saline in the syringe. As she inserted it, a fairly large area puffed up. We were both confused. She tested the saline and it seemed to go into the vein fine, and I infused ok.

The swelling has gone down, but it's still there and it's tender if I push on it.

Any idea as to the cause? So far there's no bruising.
I want to know if this is a safe area for me to use in the future!

Sounds like the iv was part way in the vein and part way out. So it would register and seem ok but, it was prob also missing part of it too. Sounds like it was part subdermal. If it was saline you have nothing to really worry about. It might be sore for a little bit but it will go away.. Without seeing it in person, I'm just guessing as to what happened. Hope you're feeling better blue.

Thanks! I got the full volume of med in me (more than 15 mL) and then in the ER they also get me to flush, and none of that burned, which it does if I miss. Bruising has finally showed up, maybe she hit a tiny vein first and went through it?
The more important thing was getting the med, which made me feel better right away. I had already infused earlier that day, so I had a weeks worth in day, and had already had extra doses the day before.

I'm back on schedule now, had my regular dose today, so hopefully I can get to my next one later this week without any extras!

The catheter might have pulled out a little bit at first, or like I said before it could have been part way in and out, it could have been in started to drip then shifted, etc etc.. Just out of curiosity was it in the crook of your arm, or hand, etc? Like I said the most important thing is that you did get your iv and it was only saline. Glad to hear your feeling well blue.

It was my lower forearm, just above my wrist. It was just odd, as nothing was being injected when I swelled up, it happened during the insertion, the syringe wasn't being handled. Even if it was more than just saline though it shouldn't cause problems. I've missed multiple times in my hands and while it hurts it's not doing any major damage.
