because apostrophes generally have a purpose, no? don't is a joining of two words.
if it serves a grammatical purpose, why would you want to take it away? it's there for a reason

a capital at the start of a sentence is superflous grammatically (unless it's a noun or any other word that would already be capitalised).

it provides no function. the function of starting a new sentence is provided by the preceeding full stop or new paragraph.

Why is it different if it is a noun or any other word that would already be capitalised? The capital letter is just as pointless then as it is at the start of a sentence. There's no need for an apostrophe in dont as you already know that it is two words joined together (because there is no such word as dont, you would know that it is do not).

And why don't we start chopping the pointless letters out of words? Why have two "s"s at the end of pointless? Pointles would mean the same without the need for an extra "s".

Like I said, nonsense.

It provides a function in most poetry, though I can see the argument against it in prose.

It wouldn't actually improve or even simplify the language to dispense with capitals at the start of sentences though - as you point out they're still necessary in certain circumstances, so it's not as if capitals could be jettisoned completely, therefore it doesn't really make sense to change.

From a purely aesthetic point of view (and a highly personal one at that) I've just about come to terms with people not using capitals on the internet but it still hurts me to read a large body of lower case text.

The "it's only the fucking internet" shout is a poor excuse for writing like a moron.

I really wish I could stop myself automatically thinking 'moron' (or more appropriately 'MORON') every time I read prose entirely written in lower case. I know there are plenty of people who aren't morons at all and just want to buck the conventions or avoid pressing 'shift'. It's just reflex on my part though.

For the record I never thought E.E. Cummings (or ee cummings if you prefer) was a moron, but that was different.

^ QFT this conversation is not funny enough.

Back to the matter at hand

Exactly. Even if some clever fucker does deem capitals inappropriate (which I highly doubt), I'll still use them. Like I said in my last message; apostrophes aren't going to be used, in years to come - so I'm told. I love the apostrophe, so I'm obviously quite annoyed. People need to stop fucking around with a language that already works! :sus:
