A TOP police officer has appealed to supermodel Kate Moss to return to Britain and face arrest amid allegations of cocaine-snorting.

Tarique Ghaffur, the Assistant Commissioner of London's Metropolitan Police, said Moss, 31, faced arrest if she returned to Britain from the US as police close the net on dealers supplying wealthy celebrities with hard drugs.

Moss left Britain after a newspaper published grainy video stills of her three months ago, allegedly sniffing cocaine in a recording studio.

Police want her side of the story as they prepare to make a clutch of arrests.

"It is very important to us that she comes back to assist us with this investigation. We hope that Kate will give us her version of events," Asst Comm Ghaffur told The Sun.

"It is in her interests and everybody's interests that she does this as soon as possible.

"There has been a lot of speculation as to whether she has decided to stay in the United States.

"But we have an investigation to carry out and we need to speak to her as soon as possible. The investigation is progressing very well and the Met is closing in on those who are behind the supply of drugs.

"But we have got to speak to Kate. I am making an appeal to Kate to come back to this country."

"If she does we will seek to see her by appointment. We will arrest her and interview her under caution."

Asst Comm Ghaffur said his boss, Metropolitan Police chief Ian Blair - Britain's top police officer - has made it clear that wealthy cocaine users were on the hit list.

"I am very concerned about the harm created by drug usage in the entertainment, music and fashion industries.

"There is also a danger that drugs are glamourised and vulnerable people take them and ruin their lives."

The fuzzy video images of Moss, published in the Daily Mirror, led to her losing lucrative contracts with Swedish retailer H and M, French fashion and perfume house Chanel and trendy British trenchcoat brand Burberry.

She has since been dubbed "Cocaine Kate" in British newspapers.

"Whatever she says will be compared to the evidence we have collected and then presented to the Crown Prosecution Service," Asst Comm Ghaffur said.

"I guarantee that, like anyone else, she will be dealt with fairly within the law. What we are seeking is positive information to help with our inquiries.

"There are others involved in the supply of the drugs. We anticipate being in the position of making arrests shortly."

The Sun said the enquiry centres on two known dealers who were associates of her former boyfriend Pete Doherty, 26, a drug-fuelled rock musician.

Moss's career has enjoyed a quick rebound, with her face back on the covers of top fashion magazines as well as a television commercial for Virgin mobile phones in Britain that shows her making a wholesome cup of tea.

She underwent treatment at a detox centre in Arizona after she issued a public apology for her hard-partying conduct.

CAUTIOUS KATE CANCELS PARTY OVER COCAINE FEARS

14 January 2006

Supermodel KATE MOSS has ditched her lavish birthday plans for Monday (16JAN06), fearing some of her guests will bring drugs.

Moss had reportedly organised a 50s-themed bash to celebrate her 32nd, but has cancelled the extravaganza in favour of a low-key dinner party.

A source tells British newspaper The Mirror, "Kate is renting one of STEVEN SPIELBERG's places in LA and was to host a 50s-style party there.

"Everyone was so excited and invites had gone out telling guests what characters they were to be - they'd ordered MARILYN MONROE wigs and everything.

"But when Kate realised some might turn up with drugs she decided she there was no way she could let it go ahead and risk more public humiliation."

Moss 'to be quizzed' over drugs

Arrangements are being made for supermodel Kate Moss to be questioned by police about allegations of her drug-taking, her model agency has said.

A spokesperson for London-based Storm said the model's lawyers were in talks with the Metropolitan Police for her to be interviewed.

Moss, 31, lost work and checked into a clinic after images of her allegedly using cocaine were published last year.

She was with then boyfriend, troubled Babyshambles frontman, Pete Doherty.

Doherty admitted drugs charges on Friday following a separate incident.

A spokesman for the model said talks had been taking place between police and her lawyers for a fortnight.

"Kate has made it absolutely clear all along that she will co-operate with any police investigation when the necessary arrangements can be made," he said.

He would not say where the meeting would take place, adding details were still being discussed.

Moss, who lost contracts with H&M, Burberry and Chanel as a result of the allegations, has remained outside of the UK since the images were published in September.

Officers warned she faced arrest on her return to Britain because they had not received a response to their request for her to come forward voluntarily for questioning.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "We are in touch with the representatives of the individual, but not confirming any arrangements."

Police quiz Moss over 'drug use'

BBC News
31 January 2006

Detectives have questioned supermodel Kate Moss under caution at a police station in central London about allegations that she used cocaine.

The 32-year-old reported voluntarily to police. Scotland Yard said that she was not arrested or cautioned and inquiries were continuing.

Moss entered a rehabilitation clinic after pictures of her allegedly using the drug were published in September.

She also lost lucrative contracts with H&M, Burberry and Chanel.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "A file will eventually be submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service depending on the entirety of the investigation."

A spokesman for Moss' agency Storm said the model had spent 80 minutes at the police station.

"Kate Moss voluntarily reported to the police today to assist their investigation as she has always said she would when she returned to this country," he said.

Moss had been staying outside the UK since the images were published.

Drug rehabilitation

Niamh Eastwood, legal adviser at drugs charity Release, said police had to act in such a high profile case.

"We are pleased to see that Miss Moss has decided to return to the country today," she said.

Moss released a statement in which she accepted full responsibility for her actions following the publication of the images.

She then went to a drug rehabilitation clinic in Arizona, and is now thought to be planning to settle in Los Angeles with her three-year-old daughter, Lila Grace.

Earlier this month, one of Scotland Yard's most senior officers, Assistant Commissioner Tarique Ghaffur, urged Moss to return to Britain to tell police "her side of the story".

She arrived home without speaking to reporters waiting outside her Cotswolds mansion.

Moss To Face Drug Charges?

LATEST: Troubled supermodel KATE MOSS could still face drugs charges after a fresh witness came forward to testify the catwalk beauty allegedly suffered a longterm cocaine addiction.

According to British newspaper the News of The World, NAOMI CAMPBELL's former personal assistant REBECCA WHITE, who has known Moss for eight years, is planning to reveal the extent of the supermodel's cocaine abuse when quizzed by British police.

The 32-year-old model was questioned by police after she was photographed snorting the illegal drug in a London recording studio in September (05), but the police need more evidence before they can bring charges. White, who lives in Boston, explains, "The Metropolitan Police contacted me last week and I am meeting with them in the next few days. They'll fly here or pay for me to go to London.

"They have told me that they plan to charge Kate."

So pointless charging someone for using drugs. Why not go after all dealers instead?

What a waste of public money, flying a "witness" over from the States. They've already squandered £100,000 on the investigation, and in the News of the World article, it says that the police have been told by the Crown Prosecution Service that they need more evidence. But what use is this witness? So she saw Kate Moss sniffing some white powder - that is pretty much worthless in court. If they're short of real evidence it will make no difference in proving the case.

Off the hook?

No witnesses for Moss cocaine case
Irish Examiner
May 27, 2006

Supermodel Kate Moss is likely to dodge criminal charges over her alleged cocaine-snorting session last year, as police have failed to find any witnesses willing to give evidence against her.

The troubled 32-year-old came under fire in September when a British newspaper published images purporting to show her taking the drug in London studio Metropolis, where her on/off boyfriend Pete Doherty was recording with his band Babyshambles.

The Crown Prosecution Service will decide within the next 10 days whether to charge her.

Moss was interviewed by police under caution in January, but reportedly refused to answer questions regarding the allegations.

It is believed enough evidence has been gathered against Moss to convict her, but police are concerned the case will never come to court.

A police source tells London newspaper the Evening Standard, "It's a no-win situation. If she is prosecuted people will say, 'Why pick on her and not the thousands of other drug users in London?'

"If she isn't prosecuted it is seen as a waste of money and proof that celebrities can get away with anything."

The police are concerned Moss was 'set up' by a music industry insider. It is rumoured the Daily Mirror newspaper paid up to $262,500 (£150,000) for the mobile phone footage which broke the scandal.

That's why I hate papers like the Daily Mirror. And yes, I deliberately left out the word 'news' before paper. Once they actually have some proper news, then I will call it a 'newspaper'.
