cute movie, fun nonsense. i normally like period pieces, but this one was very poor in that regard. other annoyances were the ridiculous train crash, and how they hid the monster in the first few attacks. why show the attacks at all? the aftermaths alone would have been far more effective.

fantastic end credits. better than the movie itself.
2.5/5

definitely not a film that would be cinema worthy...
shit was material for a short story imo.
wasted time on this one.

It's a good movie if you adjust your standards every time you watch a different type of movie meant for a different target demographic. Otherwise, it's mildly entertaining at best and downright disappointing sci-fi at worst. For me, it was the latter. But maybe I should just change my standards.

I loved it, I really did. It has its flaws--the last half-hour or so feel like a negation of the film's earlier promise--it's rushed, and gets lost in its subtle and not-so-subtle homages to past films (and J.J. Abrams' hard-on for lens-flare is truly annoying). However, as a kind of nostalgic tribute to creative roots--this is really a movie about making movies--and friendship I think it really cooks, and the characters grew on me quickly. If they had emphasized this aspect of the film, it could have easily hit five stars in my book.

Thanks guys, I won't be going out of my way to see this one, now. I was thinking about downloading it, but now I know that it probably isn't worth it. Who knows, maybe it'll be on HBO some time when I'm too bored and high to do anything else.

Bel's lens flare mention truly made me laugh out loud. Abrams' use of it in Star Trek was nearly unbearable and I agree that he couldn't resist here either (in ST my husband and I started saying 'lens flare' whenever we saw it... it was that ridiculous). Way over the top.

This was far better then expected. Meaning to see this. If you liked cloverfield I'd check it out. 4stars

Weed as a gateway drug to force yourself to enjoy disco to get with a girl?

The Goonies meets Jurassic Park meets District 9 meets Transformers.

i watched this movie for elle fanning. she plays the little tomboy every boy wants. but she has a disappointing lack of screen time. other than a few moments of elle, the movie is just kids running around and CG stuff blowing up. watched on a giant, loud tv it was alright. it's big on the colors reflecting off the lens. or whatever you call that effect. paul t anderson does it best.

i hope elle makes better use of the rest of her youth. though there is no way she spent much time on this, as she doesn't have 10 minutes of screen time.

In the first third of this movie, I was so impressed and optimistic that the remaining share proved too painful to warrant a higher score than 2/5. Fuck Steven Spielberg and Jeff Abrams. The former made Minority Report and the latter made Star Trek. Those were enjoyable movies. Why they had to fuck this one up so utterly is beyond me.

Bleh I expected so much more of this. I agree: fuck Spielberg; and his alien fetish. I love the theme and he tends to do a nice job, but then completely obsesses with it and go overboard, yet lack anything novel. Get some imagination inspiration.
