Alright guys please bear with me, I'm new to this site and don't know much of what I'm doing on here. All I know is I need my question answered ASAP.!
So back two months ago SWIM stopped shooting up mostly because all of a sudden it seamed like all her veins went bad at once, she couldn't find a vein and get it to register(which is very odd for this 3 yr fairly experienced IV user); she spent hours trying to hit a vein, chugged water, put a warm rag on the injection site, and tried keeping as calm and relaxed as she could; sometimes she would have a tiny amount of blood seep into the needle at the very surface of the skin, and she's fairly sure she was just going through a capalari(I'm horrible at spelling, sorry) and heard it's very hard and unsafe to use those. The oddest, most frustrating thing also started happening, her plunger would suction back down when the needle was in her arm, and of course wouldn't register. Holding the plunger up against the suction kept the plunger up, but did no help for seeing it register. After tearing her arm up and going into a crazy emotional freak out due to frustration and I'm fairly sure a mini-anxiety attack, she decided to take a break from shooting up.
Today, SWIM went to use a needle for the first time in two months, hoping her body had recovered and could take more abuse. She did everything like normal, and then the plunger started getting that suction again.! After trying and trying, she finally hit a vein a little, but still partially missed, and when she went to do another shot, she had all the same problems she had two months earlier when she decided to take a break.
What could be causing this.?!
Some information that might help:
-currently using meth(past 6ish months), but was a IV heroin addict for three years(never had these problems on heroin)
-All this is occurring on the veins in the inner elbow, both sides(has two veins on each arm that have been tried and true for years, until now),(has a very hard time hitting anywhere else due to overuse and she's a wimp
has used hands/wrists, but pretty sure she ruined those bc they're near impossible to even see anymore through all the scars)
-used to be a very bad digger before she knew how bad it was, but has tried catching and stopping herself from it
-has rolling veins, very hard to puncture sometimes bc they move a lot(idk if that's helpful info or not)
-Ties arm off, but didn't find out till recently that after you register, you should take the tie off before you inject. So she's always kept the tie on from sticking to taking out the needle(she's heard can collapse veins)
-has been told she ties off too tight sometimes, but it's the only way she can get the veins to pop up so she can see and hit them
-she uses very small(width and length) insulin needles, they've always worked good in the past, the long ones gross her out and she's never had good luck with them
-been known to use dull needles
-used to use same injection site over and over till it was unusable/hurt, found out that's not good so has been trying to remember to rotate and switch the injection sites up a bit
-honestly, SWIM doesn't eat a lot on meth when she's using, which she's heard can make your veins harder to hit; but when she quit for that two months she started eating regularly again, and yet still had the plunger problem today when she randomly decided to give it a shot again..
-SWIM is a fairly petite female, stands about 5'2", currently weighs around 125, but two months ago when it first happened weighed under 100(like I said, SWIM doesn't eat on it, and turns into a skeleton.-_-)(she's heard sometimes smaller females have troubles hitting veins)
-SWIM is one of those people that likes the actions of shooting up, she would do a hole bunch of little shots instead of one big shot so she could hit her vein over and over, which obviously is going to cause more irritation, puncture holes, strain on the vein, ect.
-People have suggested she might keep hitting a valve, but she doesn't understand why all of a sudden that's ALL she can hit when she's never hit a valve before, that she knows of. If its possibly this, how does she go about avoiding the valves.?
I know, SWIM had/has very bad injecting habits. She taught herself how to shoot up very early on in her heroin use, and never did any research on it till she got into meth. So please, keep the criticizing her previous methods to a minimum, but if you have any good tips for shooting up she'd love to hear them.!
Some of the previous info might be pointless, I just wanted to give as much detail as I could so SWIM can hopefully figure out whats going on, never know what little piece of information might help. If you need to know anything else, just ask.
SWIM is also open to trying new injection sites if anyone thinks that could be a solution. If you suggest this, please give as much detailed information on where the veins are located(approximately) on the site, how deep/shallow to go, what angle works best to hold the needle at for that site, and any tips and tricks. SWIM is actually open to damn near ANY solution as long as it's not changing the method of administration
Any and all feedback would be VERY appreciated.!
Thank you.
