Just a short drive from the highway,
On to the expressway, via the parkway,
Is a brick veneer house with a picket fence.
It looks like any other house… in suburbia.
An ordinary family, a husband and his wife,
Three faultless children… two boys and a girl.
A dog, a cat, a goldfish and house occupied with,
Crapy furnishings and trinkets they really don't need.
The youngest, a boy, sits in his room, listening,
To punk rock music louder than he knows he should.
The eldest, a girl screaming and banging on the wall,
In a futile attempt to gain some sanity.
The middle child sits on the back porch,
Deeply inhaling a marijuana cigarette nervously.
Paranoid, as he watches over his shoulder,
For his parents, even though they are oblivious.
Sitting in expensively upholstered lounge chairs,
That they dare not even put their feet up on.
Watching mind numbing television programs,
About garden makeovers, and so called reality.
Welcome to the heart of suburbia.
Choked into a blissful ignorance
By an ever encompassing urban sprawl.
Shaping our prefabricated kit lives.

"Look Closer...." - American Beauty
Your post here brings so much insight into the masked lives so many live. We seem to be spawning families with two faces in greater numbers every day.
There's the face they show the general public - the successful happy families with a two car garage and a picket fence.
But if we look closer, often we see that the picket fence is actually barbed wire carefully placed to hide and imprison darker secrets....the second face. Lack of communication, lust for material gain to keep up the illusion, eating disorders, child abuse, and a host of other maladies find shelter behind a wall of lies.
I choose to make my home a safe haven for my family and healthy love. How you choose to mold and impact your environment is a personal decision.
Be heard, be seen, be loved.
Thank you for this.

Excuse me. I'd like an order of rainbow, and hold the rain please.
