Long story short, i have been battling chronic pain and anxiety due to multiple back problems. Of course, that let me to my love of opiates. I have been taking about 50mg of hydrocodone daily for about 3 years (self medicating after i was laid off from my job). Now i have tried many times to taper or even go cold turkey but i just dont have the will power, i relapse every time because im in horrible pain. this is causing strain in all aspects of my life...if i dont have any hydrocodone, i have no energy, no motivation, in lots of pain and in turn, gives me anxiety. I have so many things going on right now and i also take valium to keep me calm. i have no problem with benzos, they have given me a better quality of life and i do not abuse them, im more of an upper person hehe.

Ive been researching suboxone a lot, and from what i read, it is a medication used for users who have a HUGE tolerance or have been addicted to harder drugs. I also read that it can help with chronic pain...what what?? would i be a good candidate for this program? :?:?any answers or experiences would be greatly appreciated

at my wits end...:(

p.s. i dont know if i posted in the right forum, if not, please excuse my n00bness

I would appreciate some input. I have tried many things. Exercise, vitamins, anti depressants, antiepilepsy meds, physical therapy, too many cortisone shots, kratom, and many more. Im a 23 yr old woman with a child and it not only effects me, but everyone around me..

Hey there!

You love the hydrocodone, its a downer, you love downers =], or both uppers and downers!

Anyway, I think that subuxone would be worth a try for you. Probably a dose of about 4 mg a day.

Unfortunately, I am one of the people who basically got nothing from suboxone. I was scripted 24 mg a day for 2 years and it did nothing for me. I had a very very very heavy IV heroin habit though so for you it could be completely different, and everyone is completely different, so give it a shot when you see your doc =].

You're not gonna like what Im going to say but I assure, it's the best and most honest answer.

I could tell by a few things you said that you do not take these meds ONLY for the reasons you think you take them. You abuse these drugs for other issues. The BEST thing you could do? Go through a few months of being un fucking comfortable, let the cravings and the addiction fade, change you life around, change who you are and how you think, act, feel and become a new person and this will all just be a memory.

I don't doubt you have pain, but not everyone with pain HAS to use/abuse pain meds bc of it. Maybe you're in denial....maybe you have many, many lessons to learn that many, many people before you (including myself) have had the displeasure of learning.

Suboxone is not the (long term) answer. Sorry if you didn't like what I had to say.

Suboxone is not the (long term) answer.

At first you don't know how high the Threadstarters painlevel is and if it is even possible just to withdraw from the hydro. Just sayin' because you call your answer "the best" which is highly subjective.
The problem with Buprenorphine is that it has such a high potency and if you want to enter a program to detox, I'm pretty sure you have to be free of other drugs especially Benzos. It is also available and indicated for pain without Naloxone under the brand name "Temgesic".

You talk about selfmedication but do you visit a doctor specialized in pain-therapy and thus get a regular script? If so, talk about this with him/her.
We need a little more information, like if you really want/are able to quit and which other meds you tried that didn't help (anticonvulsants for example Gabapentin or Lyrica?).

^I agree with your post DickTate, except Temgesic isn't available in the states. However, BuTrans (Transdermal) and Buprenex(IV/IM injectable) are both formulas containing buprenorphine prescribed for the treatment of chronic pain. I some cases, even the generic subutex (Buprenorphine hcl) is prescribed.

If you want to try out buprenorphine I would suggest the BuTrans patches. Since you are a pain patient, I'm sure your doctor would be willing to go for it, and you wouldn't have to worry about skyrocketing your tolerance as much due to the fact that the patch's highest dose is 20mcg (as opposed to 32 milligrams-for suboxone/subutex).

Please check out the Suboxone/Buprenorphine Megathread and FAQ.

First of all, yes i DO admit i dont take these meds just for pain, but they help a great deal. All the other things you said run through my mind everyday. i dont have insurance point blank...tried everything i can think of...pain meds were MY LAST RESORt.

Really? hydrocodone always gives me a rush, that energy that makes you feel like you can do it all and be very sociable lol :)

Believe me, you would qualify. I've known people who got on suboxone for tramadol dependency (yes, tramadol's withdrawals are arguably some of the worst, but that's due to the SNRI'S properties in addition to the weak opioid agonism) which turned into a big mistake.

The sad thing IME is that a lot of the doctors prescribing suboxone don't know too much about it at all, and would give it out to a codeine addict. Just because you could get on it doesn't mean you should.

Just because you could get on it doesn't mean you should.
AMEN to that.

Suboxone withdraws are way worse then hydrocodone, not to mention the longer you get stuck on it, the longer and worse they get. I dunno... I really wouldn't. And since you don't have insurance you're gonna go broke really fast.

I would suggest getting on a low dose subutex script, it's almost completely painless to come off, and that's after a two year script! I would highly recommend trying to get onto pregabalin, it's wonderful at fighting pain, and could be started as your subutex starts to decrease. Your dc is pretty likely to rx you pregabalin indefinitely, it's a much better and more effective pain treatment for most peeps anyways! :)
