Suboxine and Oxycodone

Good Afternoon.......I am a first time user on here and have heard that it is a valuable resource. I have been taking 10mg of Oxycodone for about 2 years now with a prescription from my doctor. Prior to that, I had taken hydrocodone for about 5 years within the rules of my prescription and have had numerous liver tests with no issues.

But, it was not enough to take care of the pain from previous knee surgeries and a more recent hip problem. Now, I have built up such a tolerance to the Oxycodone, I need to take 5-6 10mg tabs 2x per day for the pain. I have tried to find out if long-term usage (other than dependance) of pain killers is dangerous, but nothing seems to indicate that it affects you negatively other than tolerance and dependance; this information comes mostly from WebMD and other on-line medical resources.

I started a Suboxine program about a year 1/2 ago with a very understanding doctor, and for awhile, I was not taking any pain meds. But, the pain became so much that it was hard not to take them. Now, I am getting my monthly prescription for my Oxycodone (120 pills/month) and take them until they run out for relief. I then take the Suboxine so I do not go into withdrawal and although I am only pain free for about 12 days a month, I at least have some relief. by the time I get back to my Suboxine doctor, I am no longer showing the meds in my system so I get my prescription for the Suboxine filled monthly as I am tested. I take only 2mg-0.5mg of Suboxine two times per day and it seems to help me.

In the beginning, for the first couple of days coming off the pain meds, I take 2 sublingual films of the med 2x per day, but that is only for a few days. I feel crappy in the beginning, but eventually I feel quite a bit better. I am wondering if anyone has switched taking pain meds and alternated with Suboxine and if so, what was the outcome? Also,I am wondering if it is dangerous to my body to be doing this. I am thinking of coming off the pain meds completely, but I think about my 12 or so days of relief and always go back to the pain meds. I see my doctor about 4 times a year for the pain meds and once a month for the suboxine.

My pain med doctor is aware of my pain issues and tolerance, but will not up the dosage. If anyone can offer ANY assistance with this issue or help me with the long-term usage of pain meds etc....I would greatly appreciate ANYTHING that will shed light on my problem/issue. Thank you very much for your potential help! ANYTHING that anyone can offer would be fantastic!!

Welcome to the forums!
Although I cannot answer your question directly, I would suggest cleaning up your post so that it is easier to read so that others can help you.

My father has been on an Oxycodone script for a couple of years now and has developed a similar tolerance to the one you describe here. While I have no PERSONAL experience with this issue, I can honestly say that my father has had a hard time with Oxycodone addiction and it tore my family apart as an adolescent.

I have tried both Oxycodone and Suboxone (for recreational purposes) and can honestly say that the Suboxone appears less effective for pain relief, but that it would benefit you greatly to get off the Oxycodone as soon as possible and be as honest as possible with your doctor about the pain relief you receive from both medications.

Again, I cannot stress enough the importance of getting off your Oxycodone regimen as tolerance, addiction, and eventually recreation use of both your script and other narcotics can escalate quickly to the point where it is no longer in your control.

Good luck with your pain management, and remember, clean up your post!!

Thank you so much for your honest answer.......it is kind of what I have been thinking, I am not using the drug recreationally, but do respect the issues that families and individuals go through when it takes over one's life. I will also take your advice and try to be more to the point. Thanks also for the feedback. I was looking for someone that has experienced kind of the exact thing that I have been going through, but your advice is strong. I think I put so much information in is that it is my first post and I wanted to explain everything so I could get an answer that was based on ALL the facts. Thanks again and good luck with the family issues; I hope they have worked themselves out. Take care.
