The culture of binge drinking and drug use among young people in Europe is increasing the risk of a sexual health crisis, researchers warned today.

Young people are drinking alcohol to increase the likelihood of having sex and using drugs to enhance their sexual pleasure, the study by Liverpool John Moores University found. This behaviour was linked to practising unsafe sex.

Of the 1,341 16 to 35-year-olds questioned, a third of men and a quarter of women said they drank alcohol to increase their chances of having sex. Some said they took cocaine, ecstasy and cannabis to enhance sexual arousal or prolong sex.

More than a quarter (26%) of cocaine users said they used it to prolong sex. Those who took cocaine regularly were more than five times more likely to have had five or more sexual partners in the last 12 months, or have used prostitutes.

Those who had used alcohol, cannabis, cocaine or ecstasy before the age of 16 were also more likely to have had underage sex, with the behaviour of women more starkly affected.

Boys using cannabis before the age 16 were almost three times (2.91) more likely to have had underage sex than those who had not; girls were 6.4 times more likely.

Boys who drank under the age of 16 were 2.47 times more likely to have had underage sex; girls were 5.7 times more likely.

People who had been drunk or used drugs in the past four weeks were also more likely to have had five or more partners, had unprotected sex and to have regretted sex after drink or drugs in the past year.

More than one in seven regular users of ecstasy said they had exchanged sex for drugs in the last year. Regular cocaine use was also linked to unprotected sex, paying for sex, and having had a test for sexually transmitted infections.

The leader of the study, Mark Bellis, from the university's Centre for Public Health, said: "Millions of young Europeans now take drugs and drink in ways which alter their sexual decisions and increase their chances of unsafe sex or sex that is later regretted.

"Yet despite the negative consequences, we found many are deliberately taking these substances to achieve quite specific sexual effects."

The study warned: "An epidemic of recreational drug use and binge drinking exposes millions of young Europeans to routine consumption of substances which alter their sexual decisions and increase their chances of unsafe and regretted sex.

"For many, substance use has become an integral part of their strategic approach to sex, locking them into continued use."

The survey was conducted in nine European cities: Liverpool, Vienna, Berlin, Athens, Venice, Lisbon, Ljubljana in Slovenia, Palma in Spain, and Brno in the Czech Republic.

The statistics should not be a suprise. All of the trends I have seen point things in the same direction.

BTW the question on people using alcohol to help have sex or to at least have the opportunity is also no suprise!

Alcohol, helping ugly people get laid for over 2000 years! =D

The headline led me to believe they were speaking of "opiate dick" or other sexual dysfunction caused by drug use. I think personally I would have been a freak without any illicit substances so I question their statistics.
I will admit though that sex is far more enhanced via inhibition loss on mdma and a few others

obviously, there are exceptions, but for the most part i don't think drugs cause underage sex so much as the same people who would have sex at a young age would be more likely to use drugs at a young age.

Gotta love those naive teens. Opiates work much better at prolonging, there's no comedown, and they're safer to use than coke. ( Well, safer in experienced hands. :| )

Yeah, as someone said before, its not that drugs/alco are causing kids to fck younger (altho i guess this would be the case sometimes) Its more just the fact that straight and narrow ppl r less likely to hav sex earlier, if drugs were out of the question, some ppl would still fck liek rabbits at 15

ALCOHOL on the other hand, is something that usually increases the chances that a certain girl will be fucking that night.

Cannabis: No
Cocaine: No for guys, girls maybe... but i still say no.
MDMA: Are you kidding? this is the one drug that makes me think sex is pointless and makes me want to just relax and embrace whoever the partner is.

They also failed to mention 5-meo-dipt, which IS pretty mainstream for an RC... (or at least it was an rc, i believe its' scheduled now). Foxy Methoxy. This is the one drug that DOES make you want to fuck, IME this applies to both sexes. If this was an article about foxy, I wouldn't think its ridiculous. Some people also find the 2c's to be aphrodisiacs but this is just the dumbass idea that "if she smokes pot, she's more likely to be sexually active.

No, while there may be some correlation here, teenage girls that smoke pot and drink are going through a rebellious phase, one in which sex will be desireable ANYWAY, and pot is just another one of the symptoms of that phase. That is the only relation, plus I mean, sex on cannabis is good, and one girl i met said it made her horny (specifically really good pot). ONE GIRL.

However, I am not arguing that a guy who gets drunk with some girl definitely has a better chance of getting laid than if they smoked pot or took E... or even speed. This writer doesn't know shit about what he's writing.

see how SEX *and* DRUGS is the phrase commonly used. they are two different things, and should stay that way. I cant say the same for alcohol, because i see dipshits always trying to get their date/girl they like drunk so that they will "cut to the chase" or even worse, not really know whats going on. This doesnt happen with pot, because pot makes you think differently. Alcohol intoxicates you and you just dont know what the fuck you're doing if you get nicely drunk.

Cocaine and MDMA are less "intoxicating" than even cannabis. They make you think more, because they are stimulants. Alcohol makes you think less. ALOT less.

How many times have you heard a female friend of yours say "i didn't know what i was doing, i was really drunk", and knew she was most likely telling the truth, however saying "i was high, i had just smoked" would be more like an excuse?

If you're talking about "at a younger age than previously" perhaps you dont know about the 60s. When I was 15, most guys and girls that I knew were not virgins, and had at least had or given oral. Of course, not everyone and i know a kid who is now 21, still a virgin. Unfortunately, its not because he's "waiting"... oh no he would fuck anyone, just nobody wants to. Those are the bulk of 20-year-old virgins, either that or people who are really shy or are uncomfortable with sex in general. I lost it at 15, and by age 17 pretty much every girl I knew has had sex.

And I think this is normal, however age 12-13 and below just isn't right, but in those cases, the problem is NOT drugs.

People should be having safe, protected sex at 15. Remember how sexually frustrated you were at 15? Man that SUCKED. If I was getting ass then my life would be permanently better.
 
Although the predominant attitude here 'lol more sex for me wuts da problem', the problem is quite clear: that increased drug use among inexperienced young people leads to great STI rate and a greater health burden on society and a lowered quality of life, not to mention problems with producing healthy children.
How does drinking alcohol increase the likelihood of one having sex? If anything, it's if the person you're with is drinking that will increase your chances of getting lucky, no?

You're begging the question. The fact of the matter is that alcohol consumption lowers ones' inhibitions, regardless of situation or people involved.
