I'm trying to get hold of an apparently rather interesting Nichols paper where he reports the human activity of some tryptamines. However, in the national library catalogue I can't find any trace of this journal, so I can't order it through my library either. Maybe sombody can help? Here is what I have. The paper that cites it says:

"An early report by Nichols pointed out that alpha-methyltryptamine
and its 5-MeO and 4-HO congeners were orally active in humans, and
that in general the S-(+) enantiomers were more potent than the
R-(-) enantiomers in both animal and human experiments [45]."

[45]D.E. Nichols, R. Oberlender, D.J. McKenna, Biochem. Physiol.
Subst. Abuse 3 (1991) 1-39.

Information on 4-OH-aMT would be particularly interesting.

Excellent work, ek-stase! Thanks a bunch! Didn't think it was a book.

Brief Mention in TiHKAL

4-HO-aMT is briefly mentioned in TiHKAL and doesn't sound like much fun:

"The 4-hydroxy analogue of a-MT has been looked at in human subjects. It is reported to be markedly visual in its effects, with some subjects reporting dizziness and a depressed feeling. There were, however, several toxic signs at doses of 15 to 20 milligrams orally, including abdominal pain, tachycardia, increased blood pressure and, with several people, headache and diarrhea."

there is mention of 4-OH-aMT in the 1988 J.Med.Chem Nichols article called:

Synthesis and Serotonin Receptor Affinities of a Series of Enantiomers of a-Methyltryptamines: Evidence for the Binding Conformation of Tryptamines at
Serotonin 5-HT1B Receptors

alas, not human data. let me know if you want the pdf
