my understanding is that saint john's wort and ayahuasca don't safely mix. is this so? if yes, how many days before taking aya should i cease taking SJW?

14 days should definitely be plenty safe. I would say as little as half a week would *probably* be okay as well. St. John's Wort is somewhat mysterious in terms of how it interacts with serotonin. My gut instinct is that it should be fine within a day or two, once the effects of the St. John's have worn off completely, but MAOIs are no joke and it's better to be safe than sorry.

All in all, I'd probably try to give it at least a week, and if you wanna be extra cautious then make it 2. Wish I could give you a more definite answer - did some googling and I find multiple sources saying "don't mix St. John's Wort with an MAOI" but none mentioning how long one should wait between the two.

When taking ayahuasca or pharmahuasca, I have heard varying things about the diet one needs to be on beforehand.

I know the special diet and what it consists of. However, I have been told by some that you must abstain from all of these foods at least 2 days to a week before an Ayahuasca jouney.

Then I have heard from quite a few others that you just want to make sure you don't eat anything on the "prohibited list" only 24 hrs. prior to ingestion. Like make sure that none of these foods are "coursing through your body" at the time, or whatever.

If the latter was true, ayahuasca would be a lot more feasible to try... What's the truth here?

And what is the best MAOI to use to avoid nausea/the purge/side effects? Moclobemide?

STOP ALL DRUGS for 30+ days before using Ayahuasca.
That is definitely not correct. Maybe that's your opinion, but it's not medically required at all whatsoever.

Many people who take ayahuasca are on medications - they just cannot have contraindication with MAOIs.

I'm looking for a real answer here. Not an opinion. Would it be safe to do ayahuasca if you fasted for 48 hrs in advance, and aren't on any medications that interact?

I just saw this psilocybonaut and I posted in the other thread (Teo's) asking questions on diet, timeframes, and what can be mixed with MAOI's. There is a lot of confusing information. For instance in the few Johnathan Ott books I have he seemed to have softened on the strict dietary rules by eating chocolate and cheese sandwiches several hours after an Ayahuasca session. Yet we read about abstaining for long periods of time. The few times I did a rue/mushroom combo I only abstained for about 12 hours each side of it and seemed fine. We do see people just blurting out info that contradicts. Some of the extras that have been added to the brew contain caffeine and other additives we would think is contraindicated. So I like your question. I don't think there are any clear answers though except to find that people have to try for themselves. I guess a better question is has anyone neglected a special diet and remained free of serotonin syndrone. I have yet to hear of anyone doing an Ayahuasca experiment complain of a severe reaction needing hospitalization. But for now all the cautions should apply.

I have no idea on the SJW question. Nor have I ever use Moclobemide as a MAOI.

So really I have no solid answers and until there are all the restrictions and cautions of diet and medications should be followed. The cautions are listed in many areas. But what we may see are people who do use Ayahuasca talking about their rituals, diet, and any meds they may be on.

SJW is not a clinically significant MAOI; it's main effect is based on monoamine reuptake inhibition. SJW doesn't require one to adhere to a tyramine free diet but adding in a real MAOI with SJW's monoamine reuptake inhibition I'm not sure about; it might be fine it might not. I'd be using the google machine to see what I could find before I tried it.

The MAOI in Ayahuasca (B. Caapi or S. Rue) is an MAO-A inhibitor; true MAOI. Keep a tyramine free diet for a day or two before and after. :)
