Stoned driver kills 8 cyclists

Idk where you live, but in America MANY wheeled vehicles are given the same RIGHT as well as traffic laws to provide for the usage of roads. Namely bicycles, skateboards, and roller blades.

Yea I know and I think its absurd if a bicycle can keep to the speed limit then its fine but when a cars going 40 mph and a bikes going 10 mph its a recipe for disaster.

Well in this case, it was a disaster because another car was driving "too slow" in the defendants mind. So he tired to pass the car in front of him, which resulted in the accident.

It had nothing to do with the cyclists speed. Perhaps if people just had more patience it wouldn't be as much of an issue.

Not to be an ass but thats what they get for riding bicycles on a road made for automobiles. I cant tell you how many of them I have nearly killed when completely sober.

+1, I completely agree. Some people are listening to music on bikes and do not pay attention to what's happening, and completely have never ridden on a bike on busy roads before and clearly are one day going to die, because not everyone drives correctly where I live.

I have personally witnessed people driving the wrong way on 1 way roads, more than one time. Major roads in the downtown part of an urban city.

I don't drive like that, but likewise I have also had close calls hitting cyclists who aren't paying attention to the cars on the road.

There is no way this fuckup was normal, he had to have had some mental disability to do something this gay. I've smoked 3g in a few minutes to see how high I'd get before and shit, I drove to mcdonald's fine and they didn't say anything when I drove up to the window.

once again, The Network, you amaze me with your tact.

i've personally been hit by a car twice on my bike. (while living in Chicago)
It was the car's fault 100% both times.

1,000,000 bucks says this driver only had cannabis in his system and was probably more or less drunk when he hit these cyclist.

They should see if any of the cyclists test positive for weed. I don't see any evidence for the guy being stoned at the time of the accident.

I ride a bike a lot, and I always ride it on the sidewalk when possible and in a bike lane when the sidewalk is unavailable. Riding in the street is scary and I feel like I can't keep up with the pace of the cars because I can't. Which makes it unsafe. You can say what you want about whether or not bikes have a right to the road, it doesn't really matter because it's impossible for bikes and cars to share a road safely. It's a shame that 8 people died and the article written about it focuses on a completely irrelevant part of the incident.

I know cyclists have the same rights as a car, but I never have seen cars run stop signs like bikes do. In my town, there are bikes all the GODDAMN time and they don't EVER stop at the stop signs. I wish a motherfucker WOULD hit somebody one of these days.

Sorry. I'm off my meds.

they have the same rights as drivers yes, that means when they don't stop at a stop sign, i yell at them calling them filthy cunts and telling them to learn the rights of the road

Cyclists shouldn't be riding on the road either, that's what the side walk is for,
cyclists are moving faster, so they should move out of the way of pedestrians

a car can do more damage to a cyclist then a cyclist to a pedestrian.

Cycling on the sidewalk is very dangerous.
What if someone steps out of a shop in a hurry just as you pass by on your bike.
you either hit them, or swerve (into the road? into a parked car?)

Saying cyclists shouldn't be on the road, thats what side walks are for... thats just ridiculous.

A Car can do damage to a cyclist. A cyclist can do damage to a pedestrian.
There is no way to quantify the situations and say a car can do more damage. You could always come up with a hypothetical situation where a cyclist could harm a pedestrian more than a car... that argument is illogical.

Cyclists are killed each and every year by car doors (from parked cars). This would be no different if you were cycling on the sidewalk (shop doors). Most sidewalks are not big enough to accommodate both pedestrian traffic and bike traffic.

If you say there's too big of a mismatch between cycling speed and car speed so bikes should not be on the road, then how can you say they should be on the side walk. Now you have a gross mismatch between cycling speed and pedestrian speed.

When I bike to work, I am not crawling at 4mph... A road bike with semislick or slick tires generally goes 15-25 mph. [depending on the cyclist, fitness, road material, hill / no hill etc]

so what happens when a cyclist moves to the sidewalk then? I can no longer safely bike at 20mph on the sidewalk because that could cause serious harm to a pedestrian, myself, and my bike! Then there's also all sorts of delays, you can't just cycle across an intersection on sidewalk with out stopping and looking... if you are in the road [and following traffic law] then the lights guide you. On the side walk a car driving down a side street might not see you coming as his eyes are on the road ahead and the traffic lights/signs not the perpendicular sidewalk. So chances of crashing while crossing side streets go up drastically.

long story short. Bikes belong in the road. They share equal traffic responsibility with cars. Make more bike lanes! Add new types of traffic lights for cyclists (check out the portland / seattle area). I encourage you to be angry when bikes don't follow traffic laws just as you would when another car doesn't follow a traffic law.

If a cyclist is hit by a car while he blows through a stop sign that is the cyclists fault. If a car plows down 8 cyclists while trying to pass another car, that is the drivers fault.

i hate cyclist on the roads. what a stupid, dangerous way to exercise. there are bike paths everywhere. at least where i live. but people still ride on the roads. in big groups. on hilly, curvy roads. they can sense the huge line of cars behind them. they know they are fucking up traffic. but they keep on peddling. still, i don't run them over or anything. even when i'm a little high.

You have a few options here.

1 Learn to fucking read.

2 You can ignore things, not everything needs attention from you.

3 You can leave these forums until your balls drop.

Not everyone does it for exercise. Some, myself included, cycle in the road as their daily commute. I do not live in an area where there bike paths everywhere. There is no way for me to bike to my office without being in the road.

then i'm not talking about you. if you are riding your bike to get somewhere else, i dont really consider you a cyclist. certainly not when i made that statement. which should have been plural.

I've never come close to hitting someone on a sidewalk, but in the city I live there's usually a decent amount of space between doorways and sidewalks, so I can always see if someone's coming and I always yield for pedestrians. I can see how it would be harder if I lived somewhere else. Usually I ride on the sidewalk and when I see someone coming I move to the side (into the street if it's clear, into a bike lane, etc). People where I live are also terrible drivers, and it's very common for bicyclists to get hit by cars.

I wasn't saying that sidewalks are there for bikes. The only paths actually built for bikes are bike trails and bike lanes, and many streets don't have bike lanes. I was saying that riding a bike on a sidewalk is much, much safer then riding in a road. And that's true. I think there should be many more bike lanes, but I know multiple people who have been hit by cars while in a bike lane. There's one road kinda near my house where there's a separate sidewalk for bikes (1 for pedestrians, 1 for bikes and 1 for cars). That would really be the ideal situation.

A lot of towns are starting to be more progressive concerning infrastructure for bikes; its a slow process but better than nothing. Some cities have implemented "bike oases" in a central area downtown where bike commuters can stop, shower, change, rehydrate, etc. Other cities as I mentioned before are testing traffic lights where the bike lane gets a green light for 5-7 seconds before the car lanes do so that they can start moving and get up to speed so as to not hold up traffic as much. Other cities are just beginning to add more (or the first) bike lanes. These are all great steps forward. This promotes cycling awareness, safety, hopefully reduces traffic, reduces pollution, etc.

one less car.
