As an open multi-track audio format, Stems enhances creative possibilities for DJs, producers, and live performers. A Stem file contains a track split into four musical elements: A drums stem, a bassline stem, a melody stem, and a vocal stem for example.

this is truly awesome stuff...

Sick. Another nail in the coffin for vinyl? Or, another reason for purists to look down their noses at press and play noodlers?

it opens all doors for sampling so i think the impact will be huge even in production. a bunch of labels are on board and already releasing in the format. so far only Traktor supports it though so i guess we wait for the SDK.

can preview the format there, click the headphone icon next to any tune and it will play you the master "stem" followed by the other ones individually.

if this is useful depends on the kind of DJ you are. I personally prefer to play individual tracks which tell their own story, making each track its own experience. if you like to remix live a lot (three/four decks traktor) this might be nice.

for me personally no reason to quit mixing vinyl :D

I'm kinda conflicted. In terms of live remixing of a track, it makes sense. But you could do this anyways?

Now if pop songs from major labels offered stems, yesss....
