SANTA CRUZ -- State Parks officials are still looking for two people suspected of illegal drug activity in Henry Cowell State Park Tuesday.

A ranger was investigating a wildfire that had occurred at a possible illegal campsite Monday night near Highway 9 and the railroad crossing when he came across three individuals in an area known for drug activity, said Karl Tallman, State Parks superintendent for Santa Cruz's mountain sector.

All three took off running, but the ranger was able to catch one, Tallman said. When the man put up a fight, the ranger called for back-up. Neither man was injured in the struggle.

Daniel Duran, 27, of Ben Lomond, was arrested and booked into County Jail on charges of resisting arrest and the health and safety code violation of being in an area where drug use is known to occur, Tallman said. The two men with him got away despite a search of the area by multiple law enforcement agencies, Tallman added.

State Parks has been working with the Sheriff's Office to increase patrols of the area, which has seen a spike in people parking in the turnouts along Highway 9 and hiking into the 6,000-acre forest to buy or use illegal drugs, specifically heroin, he said.

"It's really an impact to the park," Tallman said. "When people use heroin, they are lighting a fire in the forest. That is very dangerous and we can't have that in the park with these dry conditions."

What's more, heroin users are leaving the park in a

state that is not inviting for legitimate visitors, he added.

"They are entering the area and leaving hazardous materials, trash, syringes and garbage," he said.

WTF?! Is it legal for that to be a crime?

In the US it was a crime to be a drug addict up until the late 1960's ;) With no definition of who or what is a drug addict.

Police state legislation.

I have heard about these places in cali where mexican dealers camp out in the woods and addicts have to hike to go cop from them. I always thought it was kinda crazy..

^umm, most people dont cook their shots under a fire... usually a lighter will work well enough.
