i've wanted to own and run my own record shop since i was a kid. i spent 5yrs working at a well known retail chain but left in 2007 because it had become all about profit rather than love of music!

i've never had support when it comes to opening my own record shop because my dad says its a waste of time and it'll go bust soon, but i really want to try it. even if it goes bust at least i can look back on my life and say that i did it, and i don't think i'll ever be able to move on until i've tried it.

currently i'm in first year uni (mature student). i was about to become AM of the nightclub i worked in but its gone under so now i'm just stuck with uni which i hate!

i'm just wondering what you lot think about opening a shop given the current economic climate and the state of the music industry at the moment.

any advice would be appreciated. thanks.

what do you mean it was all about profit and not making money? aren't they one in the same?

Well obvious question is where are you going to get the money to set it up? Second question is: how's the scene in your town? Are there thriving record stores, or are they going bust? (I know in my hometown there's no way I'd set up a record shop, because they keep going bust; even well-loved ones run by music experts). If there's no market, then there's no point in doing it.

(After that, you need to start thinking about a business plan and so on...)

yeah, there's a market for it in my town but already a couple of thriving shops and a few have shut down in the past few years. i'd probably move city if i was gonna do it. if i can get a good business plan together then i can get a loan to start it up. i've been chatting about it over the past couple of days and been advised to stick at uni and see how things are after i graduate.
