I was driving home today when I noticed a duck by the side of the road.
It was circling another duck which had been hit by a car and killed, waiting for it to wake up.
I drove past again a few hours later. Now it was raining. The duck was still there, still waiting for it's mate to wake.
I think they only have one mating partner in the course of their life.
I've been wondering since how long that duck will wait for.

One of my best friends is slightly younger than me - he's 23. He's intelligent. in good shape. He has a 3yo kid to his long time gf. His life has just been coming together lately - he was just starting to do the stuff he wanted in film school, after losing life direction for a while.
Last week he had a stroke. He's now in intensive care.
I'm told they can't operate because it would involve slicing his brain in half. He has apparently lost his short term memory. As far as I know, the doctors don't know what to do to help him, that won't result in permanent brain damage. All while a time bomb ticks in his head.
*****************
And thinking about him and his family, my mind keeps going back to the duck this afternoon. We think we're so far above everything, but in the end we're immune to nothing.
Our worst scenario - one like my friend and his family are going through... reduces us from near Gods...
...to ducks on the side of the road, standing in the rain.
