SSRI's and opiates

My doctor has prescribed me 20mgs of citalopram once daily. How would IV use of heroin or dilaudid interact with this medication? I did some basic google searches and I'm finding some conflicting data. I'm hesitant to ask my doctor flat-out because he doesn't know about my opiate use at all yet and I'd like to keep it that way. Thanks for any and all information.

I have been on SSRI's on and off for years (mostly on) as well as been using opiates for years. I've never taken citalopram, but i was on Lexapro (escitalopram) and Zoloft (Sertraline). Personally, I have not noticed any issues from taking the drugs together physically, but mentally I feel that the SSRI's were not as effective treating my depression as they are when I am taking them and am clean from dope. I just looked it up and i found something that says it increases the risk for serotonin syndrome but i dont think that's ever happened to me. I reccomend you talk to your doctor about your drug use. If you are seeing a doctor for mental health issues, your drug use is probably tied to it (Or at least that's the case for me) and talking to the doctor about it might really help. I don't see any reason not to tell your doctor unless you are getting something like a benzo and you don't want him to stop prescribing.

Heres a link to the site I found the interaction information - http://www.drugs.com/interactions-check.php?drug_list=679-0,1770-2012
