I remember they did a study where they claimed woman that had unprotected sex were less depressed or something.

Has anybody got a reference?

The antidepressant effect might be due to the contraceptive that was used although the study seemed to advocate compounds present actually within the sperm.

has anybody else heard of this study who can comment on it?

You're looking for:

Gallup, Gordon G., Jr., Rebecca L. Burch, and Steven M. Patek. "Does Semen Have Antidepressant Properties?" Archives of Sexual Behavior 31 (3): 289-293 (2002).

From the book that I read that had a reference to it, was widely scoffed at by scientific community. And there's not exactly anyone clamoring to retest their results.

I read this somewhere but it was about daily oral consumpion for treatment of depression and preventing breast cancer. Tried to convince my girlfriend but she wasn't as convinced as i was.

Big Pharma and the American Psychiatric Association are conspiring to discredit the results of this revolutionary research because it would ruin their profits. A short bukkake session each day and nobody would ever need Prozac, Zoloft or therapy.

Ah, now it makes sense

WANTED: VOLUNTEERS FOR A DOUBLE-BLIND, PLACEBO-CONTROLLED STUDY TO INVESTIGATE THE PSYCHOTROPIC EFFECTS OF TRANSMUCOSAL SEMEN ABSORPTION.

I'd think there'd be plenty of clamoring. Sex is gaining popularity among researchers because of the recent explosion in the study of human sexual selection. Do a pubmed search on human sexual selection and look at some of the titles.

Fewer and fewer biologists are scoffing at articles such as the one excerpted below (which basically compares neural physiology to sperm-and-egg interaction).

Exocytosis and Receptor Signaling

In addition to odorant receptors, mammalian sperm are known to express many other “neuronal” and classical neurotransmitter receptors implicated in essential roles of sperm function,16 particularly exocytosis. While the adaptive functions of sperm and neurons are ostensibly different, exocytosis is central to their individual abilities to perform these functions, and striking parallels in exocytosis function have been described. Neurons use exocytosis for neurite outgrowth and to release neurotransmitters from synaptic vesicles, while sperm use exocytosis to perform the acrosomal reaction (AR), in which the plasma membrane of the sperm fuses with the egg’s plasma membrane to facilitate fertilization.17 The acrosome is thus a modified secretory vesicle,18 containing enzymes and other fertilization factors, and seems analogous to the neurotransmitter vesicles that fuse with the plasma membrane of the neuron to release its contents into the synaptic cleft. Biochemically, conception is a sort of synaptic communication between gametes—or synaptic communication is the way neurons impregnate each other with information.

Yeah this REALLY belongs in ADD...

The breast cancer thing was a fraudulent CNN page that was sent around for a while. Not true. I suspect a fratboy came up with it.

Hey baby how would you like to be a receptor for my gametes?

edit: I wish we were allowed signatures on here. That'd definitely become mine.

i swallow my own cum often enough and still i tend to get a bit depressed.

Umm... I think the original thought was that the semen had to go up into the woman's vagina for the antidepressant effect to occur...

Ingested orally it would be degraded to pieces pretty quickly. Maybe you can try snorting it? Or rectal? =)

FYI to all:

Does semen have antidepressant properties?
Gallup GG Jr, Burch RL, Platek SM.

Department of Psychology, State University of New York at Albany, Albany, New York, USA.

In a sample of sexually active college females, condom use, as an indirect measure of the presence of semen in the reproductive tract, was related to scores on the Beck Depression Inventory. Not only were females who were having sex without condoms less depressed, but depressive symptoms and suicide attempts among females who used condoms were proportional to the consistency of condom use. For females who did not use condoms, depression scores went up as the amount of time since their last sexual encounter increased. These data are consistent with the possibility that semen may antagonize depressive symptoms and evidence which shows that the vagina absorbs a number of components of semen that can be detected in the bloodstream within a few hours of administration.

I think you'll find the rectal administration preferable, if not erotic.

How much testosterone is there in semen? Assuming this conclusion isn't merely the fruit of the cum hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy (sorry. I had to), it goes without saying that testosterone and dihydrotestosterone could be the culprits if either of them exists in substantial quantities in semen. No need to resort to the somewhat improbable exocytosis jibba'-jabba' explanation.

I think the high bioavailability and efficacy of oral administration for females should not be underestimated either.
