I've got a two year old niece and they are widespread in toys/cartoons/films/christmas displays etc.
Makes me think they probably played a large role in our history, but were just wiped out by Christianity. I could quite imagine that the people who held onto the knowledge of using the mushrooms were the ones we hear of that were thrown in the rivers as witches.
