I read it a while ago. It's so much fun when you synthesize a compound with a certain aim, e.g. a ligand for asymmetric catalysis, and then you work with derivatives to find the best one. It's even better when you struggle to obtain it and need to find the best way to get it. It must have been a wonderful scientific journey for them.
A note about etorphine ending up as a veterinary anaesthetic while fentanyl became widely used during human surgeries is also a lesson how carefully you should plan what to do with your inventions. On the other hand there is buprenorphine used as both a painkiller and maintenance treatment.
