I've been listening to my local radio stations for jazz programs in the morning on the way to work because some of it is really great stuff. There is a lot I don't like, though, and I'm really not sure of the different styles to be able to find exactly the music I'm looking for. The stuff I like usually has more complex melodies on the bass and drums with more of a percussive or punchy guitar, and is mainly instrumental. Any help I could get finding music like this would be appreciated.

Do you know any specific artists you already enjoy? Sounds like you may be into hard bop and the like...

does it sound "old" or "new"? most new jazz these days are terrible, terrible fusion type jazz that I can't stand (most of the smooth jazz type shit).

Come on, there can still be "new" jazz in old styles. Those are some extremely broad terms to be tossing around, IMO.

I love Smooth Jazz (guitar-focused, saxophone SUCKS) especially when driving.

Count Basic,
Brian Hughes,
Les Sabler,
Jay Soto,
Novacento,
Patrick Yandall,

note that I had to choose very few good tracks from these (one hit wonders) as smooth jazz albums are not consistently good.

Jazz is an extremely expansive genre. I always recommend that people buy a good book that goes through the history of the music, and teaches about the characters that make up the story of the evolution of the music. So you can listen to the music in context. :)

You definitely need to educate yo'self on the music of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Stan Getz, Ornette Coleman, Thelonious Monk, Gerry Mulligan, Charlie Mingus, Bud Powell, Sunny Murray, Albert Ayler, Freddie Hubbard, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Wynton Marsalis....fuck man, the list just keeps on going....:D

Pat Metheny, in particular, sounds like a musician you might like BollWeevil. :)

It is definitely older jazz I am listening to. I found a song to help describe the sound, it's not outstanding (I'm not the biggest horn fan...) but it's not bad... I'll link to it here. I wish I could find some of the gems I have heard on the radio... I guess I should get started into some of these recommendations!

Check out some Kenny Burrell or Wes Montgomery for some awesome guitar based band. If you wanna go back a little further I highly suggest checking out some Charlie Christian. I believe he played with Bennie Goodman's group for awhile. I got an old reel-to-reel machine with a tone of jazz on it from my grandfather's friend who was a local jazz musician in Milwaukee and Chicago, and it had a couple reels of pieces featuring Charlie Christian and that shit was smokin'. It's too bad my grandpa's friend is in a nursing home with dementia now, I would have really loved to sit down with the guy and hear his stories and experiences, maybe trade some licks. Unfortunately, I doubt he knows what music is now... :(

Alright, I'm listening to more and more jazz and it really is a pretty diverse group of music. It seems that the type I am most interested in might be called "smooth jazz". I found this piece, which I absolutely love... it sums up nicely what I'm interested in.

in my book id say that's R&B.

not the way idiots nowadays think of R&B as rihanna etc, real r&b like r kelly, jagged edge etc.
that dont sound like jazz to me mayne.

to me, this is jazz-

and shit like Monk, davis, etc.

but yeah, jazz is such a large type of music now. genres nowadays are meaningless.
if its good, its good.

if it aint, well shoot, i just dont listen to it

^Yeah, my problem is trying to locate more of the music I enjoy. I really don't understand the way the genre is divided now that I have looked into it a bit more. I even tried a quick Wikipedia reference to figure out the difference between contemporary and smooth jazz, but there was just a link back to the smooth jazz page for contemporary. After searching for a few songs called contemporary, some do sound very different but others sound much the same. This here is labeled contemporary (by the composer), but doesn't sound too different to other types labeled smooth IMO. If someone could help explain this, it would be greatly appreciated.

You guys got me all excited, thinking there was some renewed interest in the thread...

:p :(

a response of broad terms to an extremely broad query.

obviously you missed my point - trying to ascertain if he was looking for fusion jazz. which you may enjoy, but I find offensive. to each their own, friend
