Almost two years ago I lived in Puerto Rico for 3-4 months. When I first arrived I would buy blow, other things too but mostly blow because I was trying to stay away from H. The blow was always top top notch but I even though I was living there whenever I bought I'd get taxed REALLY hard. I was constantly going through the "this is a 10 not a 20" type of thing and it was a real pain in the ass. The Puerto Ricans were conspiring to raise the price on gringos, which harsh as it may sound is totally what they were doing. I actually got cracked in the jaw by a dude when I told him he wasn't giving me what I paid for. Just smashed me and walked away, didn't even say anything.
WORD OF ADVICE: Do not ever insult/fuck with a Puerto Rican in Puerto Rico. It doesn't even have to do with money, if u fuck with them they will get their boys and beat you unconscious and then stomp you til your in a pool of your own blood.
When I moved I brought a Spanish textbook and looked after a Dominican and Puerto Rican women's girls, so between the textbook, being immersed in Spanish and being with bilingual kids who were always teaching me Spanish I picked it up a bit.
Once I started to be able to bullshit with the dealers and they knew they couldn't conspire against me in Spanish right in front of me I started getting hooked up proper.
Then I stayed in a Cuban lady from Miami's vacation home for about two weeks and of course she was fluent in Spanish. The first time I tried her blow I laid a line out and she was like "i wouldn't do all of that," so I did half and OMG. I was so high I was afraid for my health and just kept thinking "holy fucking shit."
After my adventures in Puerto Rico I came home and there were some Dominican's who'd set up in my area and as soon as they realized I spoke the little bit of Spanish, which I can't really remember anymore, they treated me totally different from everybody else.
TOPIC: What do people think about this? Does anyone have experience being treated much better by Latins when you spoke Spanish?

Man it ain't even about race... If you go to any country and speak, or attempt to speak the native language you're probably going to be accorded more respect than the typical English-speaking tourist or foreign dude looking for drugs, even if that's all you're doing. "When in Rome..." as they say.

I have spent quite a bit of time in mexico, not in the tourist parts, but in real little mexican towns in the mountains kind of places. 2 years ago I travelled from Mexico City to Shanghai, China. I just happened to be there during the olympics, and had the pleasure of meeting a lot of really cool people, including the Australian Olympic Handball Team. One of the members of the team actually went with me to the bar that everyone sends you to if you're looking for drugs. It just so happened that the only guy there selling coke, which I was trying to find for the Australian guy, spoke spanish, but not english or chinese. Luckily, I know spanish and was able to strike a deal with him, and got hooked up with some of the *best* blow I have ever tasted. The funny part is, he was from Iraq.

well in the city that i live in the heroin trade is run almost entirely by mexicans but i am in the us. when i was doing heroin for a few months i found it much easier to try and communicate with them in spanish. i can speak it a little bit...about as much english as they can speak. but i'm not sure if they would have treated me any different if i was more fluent. i imagine that i could have been able to get a little better deal sometimes but for the most part we were able to get by. but yeah i am sure that if you disrespect anyone in their own country where you are the drug seeking tourist and they are the criminal they are likely to beat your ass. its not just puerto ricans i am sure it is that way in alot of countries. seriously what the fuck are you going to do? you are the one out your element in their country seeking illegal things.

I speak pretty good spanish, and sometimes have been asked if I am Colombian when speaking spanish. I am not that tan, but alot of Colombians aren't. I always figured that if I get stopped in the hood, I would just speak mostly spanish to the police, and when the see that my last name is Italian I would tell them my mother is Colombian. I figure there are more spanish in the hoods I would cop in than whites so I could possible get away with living in the area.

I wasn't trying to make it about race at all. Just about everyone in Puerto Rico is multi-racial anyway. I guess I should have said Spanish speaking peoples or something. I don't think Latin refers to a race of people either. I'm pretty sure it's a cultural term used to describe people who live in places that were colonized by Spain and speak Spanish. Like Puerto Rico, which means "rich port" in spanish.
The point I'm trying to make/encourage discussion on in this thread is how much has knowing some Spanish or speaking the native language of whoever your dealing with helped you out. I agree that trying to speak the native language anywhere, even if its just simple greetings goes a long way in gaining respect. I could do that when I arrived but once I could hold a simple conversation in spanish the difference between how people dealt with me was like night and day. I just want to know if other people have had the same experience.
