Soy unhealthy for you?

Coolio-- But who is to say that we couldn't get the same results by breeding selectively, given enough time?

i a-- Is that why people are afraid of Frankenfoods? Prions? I think that's a bit of a dubious claim to make.

Incidentally, I'm playing devil's advocate here. My personal opinion is that industrial agriculture in general isn't a long-term solution to feeding the world. However I do think that GM foods will be necessary for any sort of long-term (i.e. self-sufficient) space travel.

Genes don't only control a certain feature of an organism's development - they also change the degree to which other genes in other parts of the genome are expressed. By adding a genome fragment from a different organism, you possibly change the way a great number of other genes in the organism get expressed over its lifetime. It could effect both the growth process as well as the aging process. The way this works is completely unknown and unmeasurable at this point in time.

Based on the ppl I know that eat tofu and drink soy milk all day everyday--this makes perfect sense. They seem semi-retarded to me-total space cases.

Coolio-- clearly more research is needed then. It's unfortunate that by 'research' corps like Monsanto just dump these crops on less industrialized nations and see what happens.

My favourite part of GM foods-- the way that somehow, magically, many seem to be unable to reproduce on their own. I can see that as being beneficial as to not interfere as much with wild(er) populations, but you can bet that had nothing to do with why it's there.

^^that is called the "terminator gene". Its only function is to make farmers reliant on Monsanto for their seed. It is my feeling that if this gene leaves the fields, it will be eliminated by evolution..for obvious reasons :D

Currently, GMOs have one purpose, to make it easier to industrially farm crops with chemicals and machines. This is very bad for the soil and causes lots of pollution. If someone has evidence counter to this, I'd love to see it. Until then, its all hearsay and futurism.

whaddya think?

soy:

good or bad? i was gonna make a thread about this but figured theres probably already one i could dig-up.

opinions?

try fermented soy products. ill take tempeh over tofu anyday.

most of the "toxic" awareness with soy is not so much involved with the bean itself, but its manufacturing process. producing soy protein isolates is often done with very toxic chemicals, and its virtually impossible to produce a 100% clean product. for seperating fats and proteins, oils and solids, fibers and digestible plant matter, etc, fda always allows for something like 0.1% ppm of some toxic agent used to perform whatever respective chemical process. heck, same for the amount of rat shit allowed into milk chocolate for that matter.

for example, one big problem with HFCS is that its usually produced under very toxic conditions, and the chemicals find their way into food products. same happens with industrial level manufacture of soy proteins, tofu products or other bean curds, prepackaged hummus, textured vegetable proteins, most "vegan meat" products, etc. heck even nutritional yeast has a bad rep for containing factory particulate matter in it.

you could buy organic, but then its up to you to do the homework to find out if the respective corporation actually adheres to organic standards (and unless it states 100% organic, its usually understood that most of the process in producing the product is organic, but some phases in its production may not be).

or, you could invest ina food processor/dehydrator/canner/fermenting equipment/sprouters/juicers/bacterial culture manufacturing equip/etc and whatever respective tools you need to make whatever food product you want and do it yourself. i do it all the time, its cheap and easy once you get the hang of it (my sprouted raw hummus with dehydrated raw flax crackers and fermented kefir juices would blow your mind).

also, ALL plants contain something toxic. heck, even green tea has hydrocarbons which can cause cancer. apple skins have a large dose of phytonutrients which also come with a small dose of toxic alkaloids. read up on nightshades like tomatoes and eggplants sometime, they cause quite a bit of toxic chemistry in our bodies. the human body is designed to work around these things, and extract nutritional content while protecting itself from potentially harmful elements in the food. this works jsut fine on an all natural, mostly raw, organic diet. it doesnt work so well when the body is bombarded with all the exponential levels of toxins which come along with modernized industrial food production.

^thanks for that really informative post :)

im afraid to overdo it on soy. i keep reading about how it causes hypothyroidism n causes weight gain n acne n all this other stuff :\

but im curious cause theres alot of talk in this thread about how the Japanese use soy all the time, and they seem to be in great condition.

The Japanese do not have GM soy or the current production practices of the western world, afaik.

I personally detest soy for what it did to me. Long story made short: I got my period like normal. While my period was still going, I started eating tofu. Liked it so much I ate one to two servings of tofu every day for abouuut the next two weeks. Got my period again about a week and a half after it had ended.

Scared the SHIT out of me. Who knows if it was actually the soy, but that was the only difference in my diet I wasn't under any stress, had no weight gain/loss, had been having my period for about a decade at this point so it wasn't irregular...

ive been drinking a 2-3 quarts of Soy sweetened with Almond a week...love it, but do try and keep things in a rotation; drinking this though has inspired me to try getting some sort of plain Soy juice - and blending up Hazel nuts, or w/e i may find like Almonds etc., or maaaybe even Avocado(+cranberry?!?)- haha -be worth a try perhaps...?
- Pistachios with no salt would be damn good i imagine.

thats pretty scary!!:!

i have a few products that contain non-GMO soy yet they still cause me to break out like crazy. so i switched to almond milk insteada soy milk and i gotta say im diggin it so far haha:D

keep in mind, every transformation from the original substance (in this case, soy beans) produces a different product. soy milk is not the same thing as tofu, is not the same thing as edemame, is not the same thing as miso, so on and so forth. my girlfriend is terribly allergic to soy milk, but can house plenty of tofu just fine (difference lies in the formation/denaturing of the proteins in each product, we suppose).

^
good points.

i love love miso-soup, raw edemame is probably my favorite way to consume soy with any regularity.
raw tofu is something im wanting to experiment with, and there is some waiting in the fridge actually...

this old man avoided meat for 2 decades for reasons that may or may not be valid. so soy was a staple in it's many forms.
the old saw ''too much of a good thing...'' did come home to roost! if, now i were to hit the soy milk and soy loaded cereal hard, you could hear my ass trumpeting from where you sit.

to add insult to injury; i have had to have surgery for cancer 2x and now i am still selective in what i shove down my throat, however the genes will get my ass in the end, regardless of cautions that i take.

i have never lit a fart (college boy style) but when i was rodeoing on soy, i think that i could have taken out a DEA hut, hut, hut squad in a pinch with a bic flick.

Fermented soy is good for you, TOFU and soy milk are not.

Plus the fact is that most of the soy is now genetically modified thanks to that greedy scum sucking Monstanto.

I switched from soy to rice and oat milk a long time ago. I also eat tempeh now.

Natto, miso and tempeh, cultured soy.
