This might be more appropriate for Healthy Living, but I thought it would get more responses here, mods feel free to move if you feel it would be more appropriate there.

I enjoy soy and soy products, tofu, soy milk, pretty much any of it, and I've always been told that its very healthy and that its a good thing to eat and my parents always encouraged me to indulge in it when I was little, I mean how often is it that kids actually LIKE something thats healthy for them? But someone recently sent me this article, and I'm just curious, does anyone know if there is any truth or merit behind it? I've never heard most of the stuff this guy is talking about. I've never heard of this guy for that matter, so for all I know he could be a total whack job.

Heres a link to the article I only read like the first one third of it but it was enough to get me wondering... I'd really like to not have to worry about taking soy out of my diet

I read another article of his where he says wheat is bad for you, so I'm really questioning the stuff he says, but who knows, lifes full of suprises, I just hope someone out there can tell me hes a quack!

I think this would probably be a more appropriate topic for healthy living. Mods move back if you think it would be better in SO. Thanks! :)

It comes off a bit too sensationalist to me. Yes, soy does have molecules that resemble hormones. Is that somehow more dangerous than saturated fats and bovine growth hormones though? So far research suggests not even close.

I don't mind having a little phyloestrogen in me as long as it doesn't give me cancer or a heart attack.

In his article he claims that it actually INCREASES risk of breast cancer and memory loss diseases- such as dementia and alzheimers - later in life, I've always heard the exact opposite, that it helps to prevent things like that.

More research needs to be done. In certain cases, such as hormone-linked cancers, it can be an issue. But in healthy people, I would doubt that it would be a problem.

Rather, I hope not. I eat a fair bit of soyfood.

If it were unhealthy there would be a billion+ people with issues and it would be pretty well known by now. Soy is a ridiculously massive staple for most of the world's dietary needs.

^ That's exactly what I was thinking. Scientists like to tackle "new fads" but tend to forget history... the Japanese, for example, historically eat about as much soy products as they eat rice - if not more. They live longer than people of most other cultures.

Speaking of phytohormones - are Yams bad for you?

The Japs have like a hundred and one different ways to eat soy products. I am aware, though, of a snack (Edamami) that is basically boiled, salted soy whole-pods which you then open and eat the soy beans inside. Very yummy, I must add :).

Wow, check out the hatred for those of us who soy (maybe) makes sick.

Allergy tests have come back inconclusive. I can't afford to repeat the tests presently. But since I've been mostly avoidant of soy and off all artificial hormones, I've not been the level of sick I was.

I SO wish that they served edamame at bars in the states. Fuck peanuts. ;)

new studys say soy might even lower sperm count, soys in EVERYTHING even Whey Protein shake powder and canned Chicen of the Sea tuna.

:!
Well then, that study proves that lowered sperm count is advantageous when it comes to reproduction, since China hase the world's biggest population, and they all eat soy products...

I guess the anti-soy scientists are pulling a Ricaurte?

I don't think you can eat enough soy to make it harmful for you. And it can't be more harmful to anyone as meat. And people don't generally consume as much soy as people consume meat.

I mean, I'm a vegetarian and I maybe have two meals with a soy product in it a week, if that.

^^why can't soy be more harmful than meat?

I've heard both sides. Personally, i'll assume its mostly ok based on the massive world wide consumption of it. (not the same as a PROVEN poison like tobacco)

I don't think it's a very good thing to eat but I still do eat tofu and edamame(sp?). There is no way in hell I'd ever eat those horrid fake meat products. Ugh. Bad bad bad!

And wheat is bad too. So very.

Yea I'm curious too, what makes you say that and what evidence do you have of it? This is the first time I've ever heard these things, its all so confusing! This is stuff I have grown up with people telling me is very good for me!

Its like someone comes up and tells you "ok you have to stop breathing because its been determined that air is now bad for you" :\
