So I IV'ed dope for the first time today... well a friend did it for me really. At first she registered and started to push off but then the needle moved so she had to stop and re-register.
Now the spot where she missed is kinda red and really sore. Also, as the night goes on the soreness is feeling more intense, not subsiding at all. Is this normal or should I be worried about an infection or something?

Sorry because I know stuff like this has definitely been posted, but I kinda wanted to start my own thread for my own personal situation and I am an IV noob, so now I am all worried and don't know what's normal and what's not and probably extra paranoid for that reason.

Thanks guys!

Sounds like a missed shot to me be wary if the area becomes hot or you start running a fever. Look up some pictures of abcesses and if it starts looking bad see a doc. But I wouldnt worry right now soreness after a miss is quite normal I miss like 1 out of 20 shots and I have never had an abcess. Your probably fine.

Yea you probably just missed, sounds like she didn't miss the whole shot which is good as I have found the more volume the miss, the more soreness and swelling you'll experience. It's common for there to be some pain locally or in the general area of the missed shot. If things get more sever than that (abscesses, major swelling) you should definitely see a doctor. But for your situation, the worst you're gonna have to deal with is a little discomfort

What about hirudoid cream? would that help with the swelling with a missed shot?

I've never missed a shot before..touch wood (helps that i have huge drainpipe sized veins sitting close to the skin..but there's always a first time) BUT ive used hirudoid for bruising and swelling and general vein care and the results were almost instant...it makes your arms look like new again.

Not sure if there is any reason why you cant use it on a miss?? If there isnt pick some of that stuff up from your chemist. its magic ay. I'd bank on it being one of the most shoplifted items from any pharmacy.

So I put a warm washcloth on it which definitely helped withe soreness, but now it's turning black and blue, does that mean it's healing or getting worse?

if its turning black and blue, you could quite possibly have an infection. the best thing to do would be to go to the E.R. and tell them what happened, this is a situation were you want to be as safe as possible.

it could be nothing, but i wouldn't take my chances. it could be a matter of losing your arm.

i hope you turn out okay, as the people at my local E.R. actually know me by name...:\

Well it was a little bit of a lump which has now subsided, and it's just a black and blue right now,and abscess's are usually more pinkish/red, right? There really is on redness at all . If it doesn't look better in a couple days then I will definitely go to the ER.

You clearly don't care much about your arm, or you're just too lazy to get up and go to the ER.
Go now, as an above poster said, you could lose your arm. It's not exactly highly possible, but I would go to the ER if there was even a 2% chance I could lose my arm.

Bruising is common with IV use (unless your technique is impeccable) whether you miss or not. My bruises and those of my acquaintances are usually more yellow or greenish, maybe shifting slightly towards blue. Any of your tissue turning black is bad news, that should go without saying. Don't wait a couple days, you don't want to end up with a gangrenous limb or whatever other nasty business. Anyway, it's not like you have to pay the ER to get in the door, worry about that shit later, and worry about saving your arm now.

in a couple days your arm could be as good as gone.

this isn't something to ignore, you really need to have your arm checked out by a doctor.

Here's pictures of the tracks on both my arms... maybe this will help you guys figure out if anything is doctor visit worthy...

I don't want to have to just go to the doctor if it's not a big deal because when my mom asks why I am going I can't be like, "to have my track marks checked out." Plus several of my friends who have seen them say they don't seem serious, it just looks like a normal missed shot.

There is no blackness at all, just some redness and blueish/yellowish like Keif Richards said. Of course I care about losing my arm, but I don't really have the money to pay for an emergency room visit. Whoever said you don't have to pay to go into the ER is wrong... an ER visit is expensive as hell.

Like I said, I have constantly been putting warm washcloths on it and rubbing cocoa butter and aquaphor on it.

A little update:

It seems like the sore is going down. It kinda red and blueish around it, but regular skin colored on the actual bruise and very slightly raised. I really do not want to go to the doctor if I don't have to because I am broke and my mom CANNOT know about this.

I obviously know going to the doctor would be the smarter choice, but like I said it's not the ideal situation right now.
Any ideas on if this will heal on its own... please????

this same situation actually happened to me...lesson....never let some1 else hit you...i know its your first time but from now on if your going to commit to the iv drug lifestyle (it is a commitment your making) once you shoot, do it your self, get a feel for it, enjoy it, embrace it, need it, diesire it, loathe it. as far as your arm being sore....if its not hot to the touch, you're fine...get a warm washcloth some ibuprofen and rub that bump in as hard as you can take it...this should disperse the drug towards the muscle, possibly to be absorbed...dont sweat it IT HAPPENS...or maybe this shows you that maybe you shouldnt iv at all.....the galmour fades as the sun sets

^lol, yea part of me doesn't want to do it anymore, but now I figured out how to do it on my own and I feel married to the needle. There is no hotness and it's just slightly raised in the middle, but nothing pimple like and doesn't look like it's filled with puss or anything.

Thank you for giving me a chilled out answer and not freaking me out with "YOUR ARM WILL HAVE TO BE REMOVED! GO TO THE HOSPITAL NOW!" lol.... because that shit really scares me... I know it's a real possibility, but I don't want to have to rush to ER or doctor if it's unnecessary.

Edit: Mods, you guys can actually move this to the IV complication thread... it's obviously better suited for that and I think I will get the best advice from there.

glad to hear your arm is o.k., but my advice is to stay away from the needle. trust me, if you keep shooting up the needle itself will become an addiction. you'll be wanting to shoot every drug out there. if you don't believe me, ask around, i.v. users know what i'm talking about and tell you the same thing. life turns dark once you sell your soul to the needle...

sorry for all the "rush to the e.r." responses. it is true that the emergency room is not free. my last e.r. bill was a little over $3500:\(good thing i have good health insurance). maybe those responses were kinda overkill, but i've seen friends lose arms because they or somebody else didn't fix them up right, they ignored it, and the next thing they knew they were learning to write with their left hand :(.

i'm happy to hear nothing too bad happened to you, just consider this experience both a lesson and a warning...
