Mental Health Soon to see psych to get assessed for ADHD, need advice from ADHD people/experts

I still haven't managed to sort myself out with that ADD assessment...I dig what peeps are saying about how unmedicated ADD/ADHD people will self medicate, and that the shrinks ought to understand that.

But my part of Australia is super-conservative. You can't even get a codeine tablet anymore unless you have terminal cancer, or so it seems.

Years ago there was a GP I used to see who (for some reason) was allowed to prescribe Dex. He felt it ameliorated alcoholism and other addictions. He wanted to try me on Dex but I said no because I was afraid that stims would make me drink even more ...
As it happens, Dex inhibits my alcohol use considerably.

Anyway this GP ended up getting struck off the register because dickheads took advantage of his willingness to prescribe Dex in order to sell them
illicitly.

Maybe have a look here:

There are several clinics in Perth that specialise in ADD/ADHD. This one specialises in adults with the condition. Not advertising: I have no connection and provide just as an illustrative example of what’s available.

The specific rules for stimulant prescriptions in WA can be found in this document:

Thanks Atlier!

Is there any in NSW aside from the one in Bondi? I know of only one in Bondi, and not sure if it's for children or adults. I haven't tried to ring for an appt as yet. I'm going to try with a local psychiatrist here on the Coast, and if it doesn't work then I'm going to try one in Sydney.

My doctor back in 2015 gave me a list of psychiatrists who were willing to really treat ADHD (and not act like arrogant cunts LOL), and I misplaced that piece of paper. I might still have it.

Am going to be assessed for ADHD by psychiatrist in the near future, and to be honest I am pretty desperate to get prescribed- but don't worry, not for the wrong reasons (or not in my view anyway).
I have found that just a moderate amount of Dex every day (20-25 mgs) makes such a world of difference to my life.

I have no idea whether I've got true ADHD or not, but Dex certainly helps me with the following issues:

It banishes my depression which is chronic and disabling despite being on massive doses of SNRI anti depressants. It's also got less side effects than anti depressants-it seems a cleaner drug
(for example, Dex doesn't impair my sexual functioning while the anti-depressants make it practically impossible for me to even get aroused: Dex does not cause withdrawals if stopped suddenly, whereas anti-depressant WDs are terrifying)

If I use Dex responsibly it motivates me, it settles me, it alleviates anxiety and helps me to take less Valium (another filthy drug!)

Most importantly right now, the Dex are the best thing in the world for stopping my drinking, which has lately become a problem again. I am so scared of sliding back into alcoholism. Every evil in my life has been caused by booze. I don't know why but on Dex I just altogether lose my craving for booze.
However I am not sure if I ought to mention this to the shrink as I know he might not want to prescribe for a person with any substance abuse issues.

Happily I have no history of meth abuse and in fact rarely use street drugs BUT I have been spending a lot of money on buying Dex from drug dealers - financially ruinous and another reason why I hope to get prescribed.

But how am I going to explain buying Dex illegally to the psychIatrist? Since I have never had my own prescription, if I tell him I've been using them for above mentioned issues, he'll know I've been breaking the law etc, even if I claim a "friend" gives them to me for nothing.

If anyone can advise me as to how much (if any of it) I ought to tell the doctor, I'd be grateful.

It's not good to lie concerning serious health matters like during a ADHD-test/evaluation, but you might want to withhold some of your previous drug use if they are super draconian/conservative. But if they are liberal and understand that most people with ADHD self medicated at some point, just go with your full uncensored story, then it might help you get the correct medication faster.

If you actually have the diagnosis. Just because a stimulant helps you preform better does not mean you have ADHD.
Whats more important is your childhood and if you struggled to keep up in school and such, maybe you learned to read and write almost one year later then the other kids? They do a whole bunch of different tests to check your ability to focus, cognition and stuff like that. I got to do a "Rorschach test" it was pretty creepy, not sure if thats normal.

It's a bit ambiguos and different from country to country and it's depending a lot on the general policies towards ADHD, self-medication and how draconian they are in your state/country.

In some places if they think you have an "addictive personality" you might not even get real ADHD-medication EVER.👀
In other places they will pretty much do "replacement therapy" with higher doses of adderall/ritalin for ADHD-people who have been hooked on speed.🤔

So first I would investigate the general attitude amongst the psychiatric-healthcare community in your neck of the woods. Just to make sure your not burning your bridges to ADHD medication, by telling them you dabbled a little bit with self medication.

Good Luck!

Thanks for that useful info. I am not altogether sure I have ADHD tbh ...Have never had learning disability as you described ... actually that isn't true! From age 13 on, I was very remedial with maths, althoug I was always top of the class for reading, writing and English ...

ps whether I have ADHD or
not, I am keen to
get a script because it helps me control my alcoholism, and also it's the only thing that shifts my dreadful depression. I am currently on 2 types of antidepressan - massive doses - but they don't do anything!

Okay, unless you live in Central America somewhere and you can just be "your own doctor" down a the local pharmacy, don't say what you just wrote here to the ADHD-evaluation psychiatric doctors/nurses! Try to figure out why you drink, and write down how you function when you have been sober for a while, memory, focus, cognition, mood, and maybe prepare yourself to talk about that, prepare to be questioned about your childhood if you have family they might also interview a family member like a parent, I know that in Europe they do that in some places but not so much in the States.

And don't mention: "I like to get drunk, but Im getting tired of alcohol and Im here to bargin for a new better drug to abuse".👀 You get the picture. Anyway best of luck!

I'm kind of curious as to what doctors look for in ADHD patients as I've never met a person with ADHD, just ADD like me. I know a feature of ADD is feeling overwhelmed by outside stimulation and it manifests as fatigue or even depression in some people. My only other friend with ADD has comorbid narcolepsy

I guess ADHD people can be hyperactive but I wonder if that manifests in different ways depending on the individual. This is interesting. Let us know what happens
