The system will use a supercharged PC architecture with an 8-core AMD x86 CPU, allegedly making it very easy to develop for. No word on the specifics of the architecture as yet.

There's also a high-end PC GPU boasting just under 2 teraflops of computational power, 8GB of unified high speed GDDR5 memory for use by both the CPU and GPU with 176GB/s of memory bandwidth, and large local hard-drive storage (size not revealed).

A secondary custom chip allows for background downloading whilst playing games (and even when the console is powered down). Games will also be playable as they are being downloaded.

The Playstation button on the controller allows for instant and indefinite sleep/resume of not just the game, but the entire system. This essentially eliminates console boot time and allows for an "instant on" gaming experience.

The PS4 doesn't just learn your interests, it can even pre-download games it expects you to buy from the PlayStation Store - allowing for instant play when you do buy it

paving and tarring companies are screaming for delight at the amount of ground being broken here.

NOT backwards compatible with old discs, but all ps1,2&3 games are available FOR PURCHASE in the cloud. whether you have owned it or not.

on a plus side, the common expectation that games will be locked to consoles, effectively ruining the second hand gaming market, is not being implemented.

Idk, seems pretty inovative & exciting to be honest. Coming from a anti-Playstation gamer I might have to join the dark side for this one (Sorry Microsoft :( ) lol.

Although I did briefly put my 360 away to try the PS3 but was dissapointed overall with it & ensured my stand on Sony.

So far it is all geek speak to me. Instant play and resume is novel but really it will come down to the games and the seamless intergration with my home network of movies and music. Ground breaking techonlogy like controller free gaming, taking over from 360's kinect would also be something to get excited about but I get the feel the finished product is a long way off otherwise they would have given the public (and more importantly the shareholders) a bit more than just a teaser.

Agreed.

I dont even think im gonna get any more consoles

the only time I really play video games at all now is just like to embarrass someone in Fifa but my TV is so fucking sweet I almost have to watch real sports, its just so crisp.

I know what you mean, I haven't had a console in almost two years, but when I play with friends, the view looks soo sweet, it's incredible how much this stuff has escalated in such a short period of time.

I'll be having some of that, I've owned all three Playstations so I'm not about to break the habit. The PS3 is still a cracking piece of kit
