Song to Dylan

Here's a song that just flowed out within the last hour I suppose. It's pretty much based on Dylan's "Song to Woody", but it's longer, and it could probably use editing.

There's something not right that's been going on
Those with the loudest voices can never say wrong
They fan the flames of the fearful, but it feels cool awhile
Until it feeds them with lies, and the fire grows wild
Money changin' hands turns the gears of this scene
and those with the most to gain are left feeling mean
The mirage is propped up by those with the most to lose
They'll try and make you feel small and that you can never choose
How to live your life but I know it's not true
Freedom comes from within, and never from the news

I often find myself sitting alone
It's the only honest thing I can do anymore
Everyone's got their own games to play
Mine comes with 6-strings and it's trivial they say,
but what could be more trivial than playing monopoly?
Losers go for the blue, and winners go for the green
I could win that one too, but I'd lose myself in the chase
And life goes on around you, no matter who wins the race.

But those on the top'll try to convince you to play
Promise of paradise is fools gold to make you stray
From the only good thing that a person can do
To love thy neighbors and to cheer them when they're blue
No one knows what they really mean to say,
But we'll listen to other folks and pray for the day
that we can listen to ourselves and be understood
but to wait for that now it ain't no good

Hey, Hey Mr. Dylan I wrote you a song
about the world we're in, it feels like it's all wrong
You once said all its truths add up to one Big Lie
that must explain why it's so easy to get by

I used to think I wanted to be just like you
Seein through people's lies, and tellin them too
Just for kicks and for laughs but I've rethought that
I think it takes more courage to stick to the facts
Facts are crazy, bizarre, and often amiss
The girl that can handle that, I'd sure wish to kiss
Through smiles and trials I've learned all these things
But it's nothing that you don't already know when you sing

Now I'd never say that I know better than you
You seem like a man that's absorbed the world's truths
It's just that you seem hard to the people who've tried
to get along with you, and travel by your side
Then again it's just a book of your life that I've read
and the author who wrote it never lived in your head
I could be thinkin of something that's long been through
Your recent album's gold to me, and so are you
but I know that a smile ain't really worth much
When it's flashed in your face cuz of the things that you've done

Hey, Hey, Mr. Dylan I wrote you a song
The idea was short, but it turned out too long
I could go one for hours but it still won't be enough
To tell all there's to say, but I know you know that much

When you stood on the mountain top I was one soul who saw
The truth that you sang while others heard you wrong
But I can't speak for them and neither can you
I ain't trying to change minds, and I got nothing to prove
I know I'm a kid, but I've already been through a lot
Seen kids lose hope, and people lose their own thoughts
A friend to all is a friend to no one
They'll shrink like a shadow in the noontime sun
I know you're a stranger, but it doesn't always feel that way
I guess that's the point, now I'll just shut up and play

And then there'll be some kinda guitar solo...or maybe a sax solo!

I wrote the lyrics to the melody of "Song to Woody" So it's a G chord on the first line with a D on the very last beat, and it's a C chord for half the second line and a D chord for half the line. Then it repeats C, D. Then it goes G for half the line and D for half the line.
Basically just like that the whole time. At least that's pretty much what "Song to Woody" is like. Obviously this song is very much longer lyrically, so it could definitely use some variation which I haven't really worked out yet. As soon as I wrote this I recorded a version, but for some reason only half got saved, and then I got to tinkering around with my recording program, and I started on another song, and haven't really revistited it since.
I am thinking about arrangements that are totally different from what I had in mind at the time of writing, but the important thing is keeping the same meter.

I am glad to know that I'm not the only Bluelighter who digs 'Song To Woody.' And Dylan's entire catalog, for that matter. Nice job man.

Oh man I love Dylan. His spirit I try to evoke in my daily life. I kinda have a "What would Dylan do" type attitude about life, which is ridiculous, given that he was totally against that sort of thing, but I can't seem to help it, not that I'm obsessed, nor would consider myself a "Dylanphile" it's just that he has so many good songs, even up to his most recent ones.
I want to be half as good as him someday. If you ever wanna talk Dylan let me know.
Now that I reread this song there's a bunch of things about it I don't like, but that's neither here nor there. Gotta keep on writing, that's the key.
