Which have side effects
That we should avoid.
They're all mostly the same
Keep in mind this refrain-

Opioid receptors are where they act
With at least three subtypes
That are attacked
Plus they hit CTZ
and thus make you emese-

Triad symptoms are mostly due to mu;
These, plus some sedation,
From kappa too.
Sigma leaves you confused
(Thus these drugs are abused)-
But naloxone blocks them all.
Of the opioid triad clinicians see
The most lethal symptom's respiratory
You get pupils like dots.
A complete lack of thoughts- (coma)
Give naloxone for it all.
These drugs slow down GI motility
And produce some muscle flaccidity
They slow down urine flow (increased ADH)
And your heart rate gets slow (vagal and reflex effects)

Morphine is the opioid prototype
It has certain properties that we like
Such as freedom from pain-
But it addicts your brain-
(Which the Feds don't like at all!)
There are numerous variants that exist
Partly or completely synthetic
Natural opioids are few
(In fact there are but two)
Give naloxone for them all.
Codeine's what you give when you have a cough-
Rarely kills, since it's hard to get enough.
Combinations are bad
Since depressants can add-
And your breathing rate might fall.
Demoral turns to normeperidine
Which is bad since this form
Excites your brain
Since it's half- life is long
This effect is prolonged-
USE NALOXONE NOT AT ALL!
Diphenoxylate's like meperidine
And it's often given with atropine
Similar's fentanyl
Which has been known to kill
(Leaves the FDA appalled).
Tylenol is mixed with propoxyphene
And thus liver damage is often seen.
And of course, if you drink (alcohol)
Respiration will sink-
Thus this mixture's quite leth-al!
And one final drug is pentazocine
Often found abused with tripelennamine.
Naloxone is mixed in
Into oral Talwin-
No abuse, parenteral!
