some DMT first time questions

(I went back 6 or 7 pages to look for a big and dandy DMT topic, but I couldn't find one, so sorry for posting a new topic)

Now I'll be trying DMT for the first time this summer, actually I have tried to try DMT before, but failed due to the harsh smoke, I didn't even get any of it in my lungs, started coughing for 15 minutes before I could inhale any of it. This had to do with both the setting and the DMT. The DMT was very dark yellow, meaning poor extraction which doesn't say anything about the quality of the trip but does mean the smoke is usually a lot harsher. Also, I was out in nature at 10 am after an all night LSD trip and had ran out of water a few hours before, which also doesn't help in the pleasantness of inhaling harsh smoke.

Now recently I have access to whitish DMT and I'll be doing it in a house where there is plenty of water, which should also mean its a little more possible to inhale, also I will try mixing a little bit of tobacco / weed in with it to make it smoother and I'll use a bigger bong (glass) to make it less hot. I know how to smoke DMT properly, layer of ash, dmt, layer of ash, let the chamber of the bong fill up, then inhale all and keep in as long as I can.

For the rest of the back up information that might help in giving more specific answers to my questions; I am very experienced with other psychedelics, mainly a lot of LSD, mushrooms and some dissocatives. I know my mind on psychedelics very well and I've handled ego death on mushrooms and a few LSD trips where the dose was so high that for a few hours I couldn't see anything besides visuals, making walking around nearly impossible to do. Both the ego death and the blinded-by-visuals where things I liked a lot.

Either way, that's the stuff I already know, the questions I have are of a very different nature.
1. Are there phisical side effects / a noticable bodyload, if so, of what nature?
2. Are people often 'changed' by their DMT experiences? I'm not looking for change, I like myself the way I am right now. I must add other psychedelics do not change me at all, and if they do its something I already hoped for.
3. Is there any cross tollerance with other psychedelics, if so, which and how much?
4. I'm very skeptical and a lot of people who do DMT end up floaty 'idiots' who talk about entities, shamanism and other spiritual beliefs and seem to go up in their own little fantasy world, I've thought about why that happens while on other psychedelics, and I definatly do not disrespect shamanism or anything, but I really don't want to become one of those people. Anyone here who did DMT is is still scientific and skeptical by nature (and was before the DMT that is).
5. I'm mostly curious to the visuals; is this a bad mindset to take DMT on?

1. There is a equphoric body high when you begin to come out of the experience.
2.Its hard to understand, but yes, very subtly in a profound way, you become more you, its very hard to explain, this is my opinion also. so others will answer different
3. with tryptamines, but honestly if you load 50mg and smoke it right you are gonna be blasted regardless of recent psych intake.
4. If you arent interested in something, or dont believe in it, then it is not going to change your stance, unless you are really curious rather than skeptical.
5. The visuals are the most spectacular of any halucinogen, it is a fairly bad mindset to go in just for the eye candy though, winamp with mildrop is good for that, in other words, there are many more equally interesting aspects of dmt that you must discover for yourself.

1. The come-up can be a bit physically overwhelming - it's not painful or nauseating or anything (for me at least), just an unusual rush through your head and body. I noticed this more with my first few tries, probably because it provoked a lot more anxiety at first when I wasn't sure what to expect. Within a minute or two once it's fully kicked in, I lose most awareness of my body for the peak, and as I return to my body I feel powerful waves of euphoria much like I get on an LSD peak.
2. It's certainly an intense experience but I don't think it's changed me in any way I didn't want it to. YMMV but in my experience, the trip is so intense and short-lasting that any changes that occur are going to be the result of you thinking about and processing the trip at a later time. I first tried DMT after a fair amount of experience with other psychs, which it sounds like you have as well, so the whole "oh my god reality is so weird and wonderful and more than I ever thought or saw" revelations had already come years ago for me with my first mushroom and acid trips. Exploring DMT has been more of a cross between recreation and intellectual curiosity for me than personal exploration and growth. Not sure if that answers your question ;)
3. Maybe a little but nothing dramatic. People often smoke DMT while tripping on other psychs and usually report great success. You may need a tiny bit more material to reach breakthrough but not that much. The only way I've experienced enough tolerance to feel like I might be 'wasting' the DMT was when I experimented with taking smaller tokes repeatedly over a longer period of time. It's definitely better to take your tokes back to back and then wait at least until you're all the way down to try again. The rule of thumb I've heard is not to try more than once per hour.
4. Yeah, I'm still a skeptic on entities and all that despite 'contacting' them on DMT. In my opinion: people inclined to believe in that kind of thing will find that DMT strongly reinforces those beliefs, and people who are inclined not to will interpret their experiences differently. I interpret the 'entities' I've encountered as manifestations of unconscious thoughts and ideas, same place all the other 'content' of any trip comes from in my opinion. My advice: be open-minded and just see what there is to see while experiencing it, and worry about what it means and how 'real' any of it was once you're back down to earth.
5. The visuals are certainly quite appealing and I think most of us who use/have used DMT would be lying if we said the visuals weren't one of the main things that drew us to want to try it. Honestly, out of all the psychedelics I've tried, DMT is by far the one where the visuals seem the most significant and intrinsically tied to the experience. With acid or shrooms or 2CE or just about any other psychedelic, I almost feel like the mental effects are the 'real point' and the visuals are just a nifty side effect. Sometimes during an intense peak or whatnot, the visuals and the mindfuck become one, but usually they're pretty distinct. With DMT, they *always* seem to reach that intense peak state where the mental state and the visual experience can't be separated. At any rate - as long as you're in a good, stable place emotionally and you're prepared to go with the flow as the trip sets in without trying to steer it in any particular direction, I think you'll be fine. In a way, DMT is almost so intense that it becomes forgiving in its own way - you are so overwhelmed by the experience as it's happening that you don't really have a chance to fall into negative thought loops or fail to appreciate the peak because you weren't willing to push hard enough or any of the various things that can go wrong with other psychs. I'm sure it's *possible* to have things go wrong but in general I find DMT has a strong 'push' in its own direction and you would really have to work to derail the trip.

FYI, for future reference, there's a big flashing link at the top of the forum called 'Psychedelic Drugs Index' which has links to all the big and dandy threads. (;

solistus, that was an absolutly perfect write up. In my opinion anyway... that is the perfect way to answer those questions. Im sure more people will agree with that.

Thanks you for the detailed answers Solistus; its pretty much exactely what I was hoping to read here. All the questions are answered exactely to what I was wanting to find out.

I'm especially satisfied about the response concerning the possibility of changing from a trip. I've been doing psychedelics on a very regular basis for a rather long time already now, and I've noticed that my early trips included self discovering and feeling like I've been brought closer to myself. Now it only seems to re-connect me if I've been living a bit absent minded or new tripping conclusions might happen after intense events in my sober life. I now assume DMT isn't much different in that specific aspect then a very high dose LSD or mushroom trip would be, and those often leave me feeling amazing right after, so these are very pleasant things to read.

I'm looking forward even more to my first succesful try now, and thank you for taking the time to answer.

1. i haven't noticed any. just a pleasant body high.
2. dose dependant, but ime much less than with a comparable dose of lsd.
3. no idea
4. yep. me :)
5. i don't think so. if you get your dose right (medium-high, sub-breakthrough) the main effects of dmt ime are the body high and the visions/visuals (of course the other typical psychedelic effects like music enhancment or changed thought patterns are also present, but not as prominent)

Glad to be of help. I find sub-breakthrough doses to be a lot like being catapulted to the best parts of the peak of a high dose LSD trip for half an hour. Visually it's as intense as the highest dose LSD trips I've had, the body high is quite euphoric and the mental state isn't as 'weird' as LSD - not clearheaded per se but for the most part it just pushes me to sit back and marvel at the visuals. I recommend starting some suitable music before you start toking.

1) other than lung discomfort, you'll be fine.
2) YMMV; you might change, you might not. doing psychedelics makes people think very philosophically, for obvious reasons.
3) i dunno. i'll say this tho. i had a very visual acid trip 2 weeks after i smoked DMT for the first time.
4) personally, i think all that new age stuff is BS, but i don't wanna ruin it for anybody. as a skeptic, you can still find DMT enriching and rewarding.
5) i don't think it's a bad mindset, and even if it is, you'll be too far gone to make distinctions between good and bad..... but remember: a wave cannot exist without a crest and trough....

all in all, don't worry about it. you're obviously very informed on psychedelics; don't think about it too much. enjoy it man, i know you will.

turn off your mind, relax, and float downstream. it is not dying.

I find solistus's response to be nearly perfect except for 5.

The majority of the time I agree with his response to 5 but I think DMT has the ability to change to a dark or sinister tone with negative thoughts possibly quicker than any other psychedelic. The brevity of the experience can be a saving grace though and these aspects probably will not get revealed on your initial trip(s). That *possibility* he mentions can be quite unpleasant though...
