social networks (facebook, myspace, AIM, MSN,...): a threat to humanity?

you completely missed my point :/

at the end of the day it doesnt matter who joined the two worlds togetehr
as long as it happened.

i also never said he was influential.

. It is believed that the Knights Templar came with the Vikings through Newfoundland in 1000AD, and that they mapped out parts of the New World(not sure if this is fact).

Would be an odd fact given the Knights Templar didn't exist until the 12th Century :)

It's kind of analogous to how there will never be a band as big as the Beatles ever again, now that music recording and publishing technology has trickled down to the masses; rock and roll has concurrently splintered.

completely off topic, but radiohead came damn close to being as popular as the beatles, and the whole anyone can release music thing... not as effective as everyone thought, most musicians myself included dont know how to market themselves or even want to market themselves. but im gona stretch it a little here, maybe the whole internet socialization thing wont pan out as much as we're saying now, and we'll be forced to return to our natural way of socialization, or an adapted way, kind of like a netlabel?

i'm pretty confident we'll be meeting in "virtuality", definitely within our lifetimes if things stay on track.

Eventually, hopefully, I think, people might get tired of having their entire lives focused into one little neat profile, where everyone can see everything you say and how many friends you have. And all you're awesome pics and shit. I personally had a myspace when that shit was big, but I eventually got rid of it of course when facebook came around. But now I deleted my facebook too.

But that of course is dumb speculation, because it seems that everyones just fucking obsessed with the shit. You can't watch a tv commercial, or go on a website, without seeing that little fucking f somewhere in that shit.

Probably just me on this one, but I got tired of endlessly scrolling down a list of never ending banter that my "friends" spewed out their mouths.

At the same time though, social networks are simply an easy and effective way of connecting you with everyone you know, and everyone you don't know.

The online community serves as a dream-like state, an unnatural blending of their mind with the other person - something that rarely happens in real life. A person is not and can never be reduced to a sensory perception on your computer screen.
But aside from having more types of sensory input (tactile, visual, olfactory, etc) it's similar 'in person'. Instead of typed text being read, there's auditory sounds being heard. What's the *fundamental* difference? There isn't any.

I do agree however that it sucks not having basic body-language and facial expression cues when talking to someone online (of course, webcams are available).

Maybe you failed to notice where I said "Not sure if this is fact."
No, the conditional disclaimer was duly noted. Once the fact was disabused all's fine with me.

But why bring the Pauperes commilitones Christi Templique Solomoniciwhen there is very strong evidence of the Norse having mapped the coasts of Canada some 200 hundred years before

, why not concentrate on the facts rather than the fanciful stories??

There's a lot to comment in this thread, I'll keep it short.

Right now, through a website called, "peekyou". This website uses these social networks to collaborate an address, an income, street view, myspace, aim, msn, facebook (etc)

And it is now easier through these things to keep dictators in place, as of right now you can vote on these websites to censure them. As well as finding out the proactive ones.

Someone in congress is pushing for a 'button' that the president can use to shut down the internet.

That's the only reason you buy pocket politicians.

Amazing they can nab Robert fucking Gates...Facebook, I mean really?
