I was getting prepared and was really considering doing it. I had everything ready according to Phreex's intro to IV. I did a "practice" run where I did all the actions I was supposed to except mix the H in with the saline. So I'm sitting here with the needle filled with saline. I decide, let's see if we can hit the vein correctly. I poke myself in the wrist vein, the biggest one I could find on my left hand. I pull the plunger back a little and nothing. I pull the needle out a little , then tried to pull back on the plunger as slowly as possible, the but the plunger is kind of stiff, so when the blood filled in, it came in pretty hard. Now I'm not sure if I pulled back to hard on the plunger and because is was stiff it kind of jumped and the blood rushed in, or if I was in an artery. I guess my biggest question is, are there arteries in the wrist?
Also, when I was done it looked like some blood came out of the vein because it was dark around where I poked which eventually turned into a small looking bruise. Does that happen everytime? Do I always show a track mark?
Thanks in adv for any help.
PS: After I wasn't sure, I sniffed what I had.

are there arteries in the wrist?
YES.
Did you hit one? From what you described, it sounds like NO. I'm guessing that the plunger was just a little stiff, as you suspected. Pulling back and getting a little blood (yes, it does sort of "rush" into the syringe) in the syringe (but NOT having any blood enter the syringe when you insert the needle but have yet to touch the plunger) suggests that you did well and were in a vein. The bruising after surrounding the area is normal, especially with your first time injecting and with smaller veins like the ones on your wrist. I had that bruise too, it usually goes away in a day or so, and you won't leave a track mark from one injection -- and if you are worried, clean the area with rubbing alcohol and put on a little neosporin.
Sounds like you are doing okay, but you might want to practice pulling and pushing the plunger when it is not in your arm so that it is not stiff and you can inject easily when you actually insert the needle.
Good Luck!

I wanna inject something.....drool over shot...
You were most likley in a vein. If you were to hit an artery the blood would continue to rush into the syringe. I prefer using the one at my elbow joint. The ones in the wrist are rather small.

So what you guys are sayin is even though the plunger took a decent amount of pressure to pull back, the pressure from hitting an artery would puch that shit back itself? Damn. I'm just being careful, I've never done this before.
Thanks!
