Being a psychiatrist is not easy. It is very hard and takes a lot of hard work.
Step 1) Stop doing drugs--or at least seriously get your habit under control
Step 2) Start getting very interested in biology and chem
Step 3) Once college starts get a easy major and take the pre med classes. You want the easy major to make sure your gpa is high because getting into med school is all about your gpa. Make sure you kill your science classes.
You will need to take:
Bio 1/2
Chem 1/2
Ochem 1/2
Physics 1/2
Calc 1
2 Semesters of English
Step 4) Take the MCAT
You will need a 30 to be competitive at MD Programs, a 27 to be competitive at DO programs
In between these steps) Volunteer at a hospital, shadow a doctor or two, get involved in bio or chem research at your university
Step 5) Get into med school
Step 6) Pass your 3 board examinations
Step 7) Land a psychiatrist residency (3 years)
Done.
So you are talking about 4 years undergrad 4 years med school 3 years residency.
You can do it. You need to be motivated. The kids in your pre med classes will be the most motivated kids you have ever met.
