So I have my first appointment with a psychiatrist on monday...

^^ Good post thenugg :)

My friend who studied psychology told me 'bullshit, you have to be careful with these people because they are just trying to diagnose you with anything they can thing of that loosely fits your situation, regardless of whether you have it on not.
While your friend is totally entitled to their opinion, in my experience this is NOT true. Well, at least it's not true of ALL psychs. I'm sure there are a few bad eggs out there who just want to give any old diagnosis rather than actually finding out the real problems. But MOST psychs are genuinely concerned about helping you.

Best wishes for your appointment on the 14th! Let us know how it goes <3

I'm sorry that my post may have scared you, however it is the reality of things these days. I just made that post so that you're aware of the fakes out there, and I believe you're clever enough to know the difference between someone who genuinely cares for your mental health and some crank who just wants to make a buck.

Just keep your head up. If you feel uncomfortable or odd then I would look elsewhere. But don't be so quick to judge.

No worries, dude, it'll be fine. Just be yourself and use your smarts to determine whether or not this person is right for you. Best of luck!

There is always a question in psychotherapy, psychology, psychiatry etc, are we pathologizing normal variations in human temperament? Wooger's point and others about some clinicians that some diagnoses are made through scanning people to see what model of pathology they fit definitely rings true for me.

Some very prominent psychotherapists, past and present, have or have had deep concerns about psychotherapy and diagnosis being more about fitting individuals to societal conventions than about meeting the true needs of clients. A psychotherapist who thinks they are all out for their patient uninfluenced by societal or even state concerns has forgotten where he/she received licensure or certification, education, training and status as a psychotherapist.

Psychotherapists who see themselves as unmitigated and pure resources for their clients are fooling themselves. No one is without agenda and licensure considerations and training creates enormous biases in one's approach which may or may not be in the client's interests.

I love this place - everyone is so kind here!! seriously, you are all amazing (I mean that, and I'm not even high or anything :P) and thank you for all the well wishes!!

I'm just hoping they don't try placing me on antidepressants or something again, during my initial consultation they asked me about what medicines I had tried. i told them the latest one was trazodone which I was on for 3 months - they said that wasn't long enough to see results! jebesus!

Read about this on wiki about trazodone:
mCPP, a non-selective serotonin receptor agonist and serotonin releasing agent is a common active metabolite of trazodone, nefazodone, etoperidone, and mepiprazole, and it has been suggested that it may play a role in trazodone's therapeutic benefits.[30][31][32] However, scientific research has not supported this hypothesis and mCPP may even antagonize trazodone's efficacy as well as produce additional side effects

From all I have ever been told 3 months is definitely long enough to see results. If no results after 4-6 weeks, then you move on.
