dilation of the pupils is under the control of the sympathetic nervous system (did i get that right? im never sure) which uses adrenaline as a neurotransmitter. methamphetamine has adrenergic agonist effects and this causes the pupils to dilate, as well as some other symptoms like dry mouth and increased heart rate.
this is not the same mechanism as the eye drops optometrists/opthamologists use in an eye exam. i'm not sure if it's still used, but one possible drug in those eye drops is atropine, an acetylcholinergic antagonist, which, rather than directly causing the pupils to dilate, inhibits the mechanism which contracts them, the parasympathetic nervous system which is primarily based on acetylcholine.
incidentally, the technical name for dilated pupils is mydriasis.
